Hello once again
it's Groundhog Day for me. I'm afraid i have to ask the same old question once again, please. I have an account with zero balance that i'd like to close [but NOT delete]. I do know this earlier advice [with my opinion of current status]: 1. balance must be zero = YES... ![]() 2. all children must be already closed = NO CHILD ACCOUNTS HERE 3. there must be no unfinished schedule referencing the account = NO SCHEDULE FOR THIS ACCOUNT [open or closed]. Obviously at least one of my believed statii above must be incorrect, else logically i'd be able to close this account. #2 & #3 seem to be the most certain, so i am wondering again about #1. KMM shows the account balance to 2 decimal places... as $ 0.00. Crazy idea maybe, but is there any way there might be some obscure rounding error, such that the real value is something like 0.00000001 [etc]?, which though looks like 0.00 when rounded to 2 decimal places, is nevertheless not truly 0 ? |

Increase the precision setting, as there's probably a very little balance still left in the account.

Thanks Hei Ku. Do you mean the *Price* Precision, in the General tab for KMM Configuration? I can't find any other reference to precision. I increased it from my value of 5, to the maximum allowed of 10, but this account's balance remained as 0.00. Is it possible to increase the precision setting for just a single account's ledger view; if so, how pls?
Otherwise, i'm stumped, & am beginning to assume i'll just have to learn to accept the ongoing visibility of this zero-balance inactive account. Thanks. |

Yes, that's the setting I was talking about.
Is it the investment account or the individual stocks?

And, does it have a brokerage account, by any chance?

Actually, none of those things applies; it's simply a savings account. It's had over its history a large number of transactions including transfers in & out of other accounts, many of which were investment accounts & with individual stocks. All those other accounts [& investments] are themselves now already closed. As far as i can see, only the final transaction [which took its balance notionally to zero] is associated with another still-open account [in that this transaction was a transfer from the one to the other account]. That surely shouldn't be the root cause here for this troublesome zero-balance-but-still-won't-close savings account?

Check if it's referenced in a report.
I know it's silly when this happens, I'll try to improve this so that it gives a hint on why it can't be closed.

I know it's no consolation, but I just submitted a fix to show the reason in the tooltip of the close account button
In the meantime, could you save your file as an anonymous file, reopen, and check if the balance is non zero? The anonymous file multiplies the transactions by a random huge number, so it will be more visible in that case.

Thanks for those replies. I spent a long time going through all my "Favourite" [customised] reports, & found 11 that accidentally referenced this account [which i've now corrected]. After doing that, sadly the "Close account" option remains greyed out & unavailable for that account. It's entirely possible that some or many of the "standard" KMM reports might also reference this account, but there's just far too many of them for it to be practicable for me to have to go through one by one... so IF any of those are what's forcing this account to stay open, then i'll just have to accept that it's going to remain permanently open.
Sorry if this question is dumb, but i need clarification pls on the anomymised file technique you suggested. After saving my file as anonymised, WHICH file do i then open to inspect for a non-zero account balance; my original file, or the new anonymised one? If the original, does this imply that the anonymising process changes the integrity / status / contents of the original file [in which case obviously i'll need to back it up first & restore it after]? Thanks. |

No, open the anonymized file. It doesn't change your original file.
Sorry for my incomplete explanation.

OK, that was a very cunning idea of yours!

Try with a net worth report

I'm sorry that i'm apparently being so dense here, but i'm struggling to follow the logic. Firstly the NWR does not allow me to actually edit the underlying data, & secondly the NWR just like the ledger still only displays to 2 decimal places... hence gives the balance as $0.00.

No, you're not being dense.
I'm trying to think of a way to figure out the balance to help in this situation. What version of KMyMoney are you running, and how did you install?

At the moment, what I can think of, is manually editing a copy of your file, to change the precision for the specific currency.
If you feel comfortable doing it (it will require uncompressing the .kmy file and editing it with a text editor), I can prepare the instructions.
