Lost data file

Wed Jun 11, 2014 7:29 am
KMM refuses to open an existing (?) data file and returns to the Welcome Page.

KMM 4.6.4 running on Ubuntu 14.04. This problem arose after the laptop closed down when the battery reached zero, KMM was one of the applications running at the time.
All ways of opening the data file have failed, including specifying the file restored from backup dated 14/05/14.

Any ideas as to how I might recover years of financial record?

Many thanks.

First, make sure that your file (or your backup) is available. A KMyMoney file is just a compressed XML file. So doing
Code: Select all
zcat your_file.kmy > your_file_as_xml.xml

will produce the your_file_as_xml.xml file which should contain all your data in xml format. Try to open that file using the application. Opening a file shouldn't fail without any error.

Well I never did . . .
Converting to .xml and then opening with KMM appears to have worked fine, I can now close the application and re-open without drama just like nothing ever happened.

That is a huge relief, many thanks, Christian.

I'd recommend to understand this as a reminder that it makes sense to do regular backups of your data -- after all, your hard disk could just die at any moment, and then your data would be gone for good. ;)

I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.
