Multiple categories for the same transaction

Dear KMyMoneyMakers,

I've been using KMyMoney for a while, and there's something that's driving me nuts.

I would like to get reports telling me how profitable/expensive a property is (also for other kinds of products).

For instance, imagine that you have a flat: it can be both an asset and a liability.

Transactions that have to do with the flat may be expenses or deposits, and they may fall in multiple categories: utilities, taxes, mortgage, etc. They may also take place in multiple accounts. But I would like to know, in the end, how profitable that product (the flat) really is.

In order to solve my problem, I would like to categorise every transaction as belonging not to one category, but several.

One option could be to have:
* Flats
** Flat 1
** Flat 2
** ...
* Bills
** Utilities
*** Electricity
* Taxes
** Sewage
And so on.

At the present time, I see two possible solutions:
Replicate all expense and income categories accross a tree, as follows:

* Flats
** Flat 1
*** Utilities
**** Electricity
** Flat 2
*** Utilities
**** Internet
**** Water
** ...

But that is a lot of replication, and does not easily let me know how much I'm paying for internet (combined), or in taxes (combined). (The Flat category would "dominate" other categories).

An alternative is to use tags (semi-colon separated list of strings) in the transaction's memorandum. That's error prone, ad-hoc. You can't easily tell if something lacks a certain tag.

First of all: how would you suggest to approach this problem?

A possible solution might be to have is a bit more structure in the category field. In particular, being able to select more than one category would be great. (NOTE: I know that I can already do that to split transactions, but that is not the case here. The 100% of the transaction is attributable to both categories).

That way, I could select Both Flats:Flat1 and Bills:Utilities:Internet, and then analyse income and expenses using either criteria.

Maybe there's a different solution already?

Cheers

On the new version we have tags for this.

But otherwise, you could use memos per split to help you output fine-grain reports and calculate what you want
