Lost Data

Thu Sep 25, 2014 4:28 pm
Today I installed KMyMoney as I am trying to leave Windows and MS Money.

I have used MS Money for many years and know that it automatically saved the inputted data on the fly. When closing the program either via the X of the File menu it will show the backup progress and close.

When I set up KMyMoney I set it to make one backup and carefully made sure I left the program by using the Quit option in the File menu. Each time I was asked if I wanted to save the data.

The first time I closed the program there were some 6 accounts entered.

I continued later and added another 9, noticing that at the top of the window was 'makem.kmy [xxxxxx]- KMyMoney. The xxxxx was something like 'edited'.

I closed the program as normal but when I reopened it I found that only the data I first entered (First 6 accounts) were present. Now, I suppose it is possible that I didn't close is as normal but I feel sure I did.

Can someone tell me how KMyMoney works in respect of saving please?

Does it save on the fly?

Does it automatically save or prompt you in every instance?

Can my loss of data be explained?

I must say, although I have only just started into this I have been very impressed and probably will prefer it to MS Money.

I think I have found what caused the loss.

When I set up KMM I set it to automaticall backup every 10 minutes and also when closed. However, as the bottom of the page was not visible, (see my previous post today) I did not select the 'ok'. The settings were discarded and left as default.

At thime, also being new to Gnome, I was unaware windows could be moved with alt/click. I must have closed KMM as I do MSM (X) or from the task bar.

I wonder if it would have been better for the otions two option were default and needed deselecting if necessary. (would anyone not want those option selected?) That would have saved me some time but it is totally my fault :<

It should have prompted if you closed the application with data still unsaved. We take it very seriously when there's a risk of losing data.

Unless you killed the application, it should prompt to save the file before exiting. Did this happen more than once?

I have been using KMM for about 3 months and included all my transactions of all my accounts since jan17 and about 3 years of my investment.
Yesterday I was doing some entries (Im not sure in what panel, maybe in schedule or ledger) and I get an error message something like "out of memory" but KMM did not close after closing this message. I continue to use KMM normally and saved my progress before close KMM. After a while I open KMM again but my previous job was not saved! It never happened before!
I retyped everything again, saved and quit from KMM. Reopen and it was nice. Continue to enter some others transactions, made some reconciliations, saved and close KMM. Reopen and the reconciliations was not there. It is happening today again. I tried to save as another file but nothing changed.
Someone could help me to solve it. KMM is the only manager that fulfilled my needs?
Im using windows 4.8.0 version with GPG encryption.
Is there anyway or tool to fix the KMM or make a clean copy of my database?
Thank you,
