My credit union has a feature that automatically transfers money from my checking account to special savings account called a "change jar". When I use my debit card, the difference between the actual charge and the next highest dollar amount is transferred from checking to the savings account. For example, if the debit card charge amount is $119.57, a separate transaction will be entered transferring $0.43 from checking to the change jar savings account. For these transactions, I use a transfer from checking to the savings account. The problem I have is with the check number. Since this isn't technically a check number, when entering the transaction in the checking ledger I change the check number to the word "Debit" so that I can visually see the difference between true checks and debit transactions. In the checking ledger the check number is filled in with the word "Debit". However, the change jar savings ledger typically has a check number of 1. I realize that savings accounts typically don't use check numbers but I find this maddening that the check number doesn't transfer to the savings transaction even though the savings ledger provides a placeholder for a check number. Another issue I have is that the check number "Debit" does not transfer when using the memorized transaction feature. Again, I realize "Debit" is not a check number but I don't understand why the check number is set to 1 when I use the memorized transaction feature to enter these transfers.
I am using KMM 4.6.3 on a Linux Mint 13 system. Any ideas or explanations? If using the word "Debit" in the check number is not kosher, how do I enter any of these debit transfer transactions so the check number does not default to 1 in the savings ledger? Thanks. |

I found that I had created this account as a checking account. Once I changed the account type to a savings account, the checking number disappeared from the ledger view. No harm, no foul.
