KDE Help Center could't launch

Sun Jan 04, 2015 3:35 pm
I have Kmymoney, KDE Platform Version 4.13.3 installed through Ubuntu version 14.04.1 LTs . I used the Ubuntu's Software Center to install Kmymoney. When clicking on the Help Menu, I receive the following Error, " Couldn't launch the KDE Help Center, couldn't find service "Khelpcenter."
I have no idea what to do about this error as I just installed the software on 01/04/2015. I also have only set up one Bank account and stopped there. I sldo mudt mention the fact that I am totally a totally new user of Ubuntu and know very little about this OS as well. As far as downloading software and trying to install it, I only go through Ubuntu's software center as I have no idea on how to install the software in my own as yet.
I need the help file and need to know how to get it up and running . If someone knows how to get this going I would deeply appreciate it.
I tried Kmymoney on a machine running Windows 7 but it wouldn't import QIF from Quicken and was having some sort of a problem to do with dates and wouldn't run at all so I removed it and am trying it on this machine. I have been using Quicken sense 1992 but want to try to get away from it as there is always problems with their upgrades. The latest 2015 upgarde will not even install om my Windows 7 machine which has the 2014 Quicken working and running.
Thanks for any help but don't worry about what I put in about Quicken.

As you are in Ubuntu with the Unity desktop, you simply do not have the KDE Help Center installed. I am not sure if it will show up in the Software Center (it does not in Kubuntu's version of it no matter what search terms I could come up with)), so you may have to install it manually:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install khelpcenter4

Another option is to view the documentation on the web or download the pdf version found on the same page.

claydoh.
I tried your commands as well as varied them but I may be doing it all wrong in any event. I will past what I saw come up. I don't know anything about it all so this should better tell you the story at this point.
james@james-System-Product-Name:~$ select all
> sudo apt-get update
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `sudo'
james@james-System-Product-Name:~$ apt-get update
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
james@james-System-Product-Name:~$ apr-get install khelpcenter4
No command 'apr-get' found, did you mean:
Command 'apt-get' from package 'apt' (main)
apr-get: command not found
james@james-System-Product-Name:~$ apt-get install khelpcenter4
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
james@james-System-Product-Name:~$ install khelpcenter4
install: missing destination file operand after ‘khelpcenter4’
Try 'install --help' for more information.
james@james-System-Product-Name:~$
I can see where I messed up in typing the commands as well, Jim

Yes, you got an extra character, ">" in the first one.
You need to append 'sudo' before the commands, exactly as I showed, to get the required admin privileges to be able to install it.
I might suggest you use the Software Center to install a tool called synaptic, which is an advanced graphical package manager and will show everything available, including all the libraries and things you will never need ;D . You can use that to search for the desired package if you don't wish to do this from the command line.
