Reinvest Dividend Transaction Form - No Total Amount Field

I have been using version 4.7.1 in Windows 7 for a few months in an attempt to get away from Quicken. The only issue I have been unable to figure out is that the Transaction Form only shows fields for Number of Shares and Share Price when entering a Reinvest Dividend activity. There is no field for Total Amount. I have been working around this by entering the total amount into the Share Price field and then dividing by the number of shares. After completing the transaction, a field with the Total Amount appears in the Transaction Form and the Total Amount appears in the Value column for the transaction in the ledger. About half the time the Total Amount is off by a penny or so. While this isn't a major problem, it would be better if I could enter the Total Amount when entering or editing a transaction and allow the software to calculate the Share Price. The KMyMoney Handbook says that I should be able to do this.

I do get the "Price" field under the "Shares" field when I define a reinvested dividend. Once the transaction entered, the "Price" field changes to "Price/Share" and the correct unit cost is displayed. I think you need to edit your investment, go the the second pane (Investment Details) and change the Price Entry method to "Total for all shares."

I am using KMyMoney 4.8.0 on Ubuntu 16.04. I am having the same problem. After creating an investment I am able to buy shares and show a total and enter it in the ledger. But when I attempt to use the "Reinvest Dividend" transaction, the Total field does not appear and the "Enter" button does not enable. I have tried setting the Price Entry Field in the investment to "Default" and then to "Total For All Shares" but it does not work in either case.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am using KMyMoney 4.8.0 on Linux Mint 18.1. I have all investments set to "Total For All Shares". When I select "Reinvest Dividend" in the Transaction Form there are three active data entry boxes on the right side - Date, Shares and a third with no label. The Total label should be next to this third box but instead appears lower down. I edit the Date as necessary, enter the number of new shares and the total amount of the reinvested dividend into these boxes. One more step is needed in order for the "Enter" button to be enabled. A Category must be selected in the drop down list for the long box with the "Interest" label on the left side. For reinvested dividends, I created an Income subcategory of "Investment Income" with a further subcategory of "Dividends Reinvested".

The KMyMoney Transaction Form includes "Activity" choices of Dividend and Reinvest Dividend but has nothing for long or short term capital gains. I created income categories so that I could separate dividends from gains in reports. My Income category list includes the following:

Income
Investment Income
Dividends Received
Dividends Reinvested
Interest
Long Term Capital Gains Received
Long Term Capital Gains Reinvested
Short Term Capital Gains Received
Short Term Capital Gains Reinvested

Each of these categories have the "Include On Tax Reports" box checked as they are all taxable. I have a similar list of categories for my IRA with that box not checked.

Works for me.

Thanks CloudDriver, I created a Investment subcatagory as you suggested and it works. Wonder why the higher level catagory I was trying to use did not work. This is a better organization, so I'm not going to worry about it. Thanks again.

Hello,

I'm running into the same problem with a much newer versions.
KMM v5.0.8 from my distribution (Linux Mint v20.1) and also a AppImage with version 5.1.2 showing the same odd behaviour.
When entering a reinvested income for a fund, I can enter the number of shares and the price of a share, however I can not close the transaction and save it.
(the total amount of the transaction is not displayed.
In can move from field to fields but I have no chance to save the transaction.
I have a screenshot available but don't know how to attach it to the post.
Should we head over to bugs.kde.org and report it (again).

Without able to enter dividends for investments does it not much useful for me.
Cheers
Fred

I do the transaction in two steps:

First, I do a Dividend transaction and credit the appropriate category (for me it's either: Ordinary Dividends, Short Term Cap. Gains, or Long Term Cap. Gains).
Then I do a Buy transaction using the cash generated in the first transaction.

This gives me all the historic detail I need and makes it very easy to get appropriate reports to verify against brokerage tax forms.

Well, that is not the procedure I'm following.
I think it's more straightforward to enter a Dividend reinvested with the details of # of shares and $price per share or thr total amount of Dividend
Anyhow... I'm still cannot save the entered transaction.

Fred,

I also am using KMM version 5.0.8 on linux Mint 20.2. Please see my post to this thread from March 2017. In order to to save a reinvestment transaction you need to select an Income Category such as those I had created and listed in that post. The income Category is selected from the drop down list in the "Interest" field. This field is required data for reinvestment transactions. After doing this selection the Enter button will become active so you can save the record.

Also, IMO it is best to set the "Price Entry" to "Total for All Shares" for each Investment. By doing this you can enter the Number of Shares and the Total Cost for those shares in your transactions, rather than the Price/Share. KMM will then calculate and display the Price/Share by dividing the Total Cost by the Number of Shares. From your description it appears that you have "Price Entry" set to either "Price per Share" or "Default". You can edit each investment to make this change.

How have you structured the categories, as Subcategories of ... or all as main categories under 'Income'?

I followed your advice and it seems to work now.
The only thing what I noticed is that 'I have' to hit the [ENTER] button to save the transaction.

During regular transactions (on Bank-Account/Creditcard) I'm cycling through the fields with TAB and at the end it saves the TA on its own.
