Can't Export a Report as a CSV File

Thu May 14, 2015 7:40 pm
I am using KMyMoney version 4.7.2 on a Windows 7 PC. I would like to export a report as a CSV file so I can view it in a spreadsheet. When I click the Export button on the report's display page, I have a choice to export as either an HTML file or as a CSV. CSV is the default. I enter a file name and click save. The file always saves as an HTML, never a CSV.

I checked my plugin list and I do have the CSV Exporter plugin checked.

What am I missing?

What version are you running?
There was actually an error in one version and it exported the wrong format.

Thanks for the quick response.

I had been running Version 4.7.1 up to today when I discovered that version 4.7.2 was available. Downloaded and installed version 4.7.2 today in hope that the issue would go away. Still have the same problem.

It's working fine here, but I remember there was some kind of issue. I'll try to find the relevant fix.

In the meantime, make sure the file has the .csv extension, there's an automatic detection that will not work otherwise.

Problem solved!!! ;D

Your comment "make sure your file has a .csv extension" made a light bulb go off in my head. Typing a .csv extension with my filename achieved the desired result. The reason why I hadn't originally thought to do this is as follows:

The "Export as" dialog box has a checkbox on the bottom left that says "Automatically select filename extension (.csv)". I had thought that this indicated that .csv would be added to the filename that I typed into the "Name:" box above. I had also thought that the "CSV files" in the "Filter:" indicated that the file I wanted to create would be a .csv file.

I now see that neither indication is true. The "Filter:" selection between .csv and .html only affects what file types are shown in the large box above. The "Automatically select filename extension" checkbox changes between (.csv) and (.html) depending upon the "Filter:" selection, but whether this is box checked or not has no effect on the filename extension on new files to be saved.

Based on my experience with other programs, it would be much better for the "Export as" dialog to provide a dropdown list of the appropriate filename extensions that could be used. Selecting an extension from the list would add it to the filename.

Thanks again for your help.

Glad that it solved.

I actually tried and, without touching anything else, if you enter a plain filename, it will add the .csv extension. But if you change anything else, there's some weird heuristics taking place and bad things happen.

I'll see what I can do to make the process more straightforward and not so prone to mishaps.

Interesting. Without touching anything else, when I enter a plain filename, the program always adds a .html extension.

Now that I know better, I'll just type the .csv extension manually, which is an easy fix to the issue.
