I've got 4.7.2 up on another machine to scope the work necessary to prevent the consistency errors reported by 4.7.2.
Clearing out the majority of the problems wasn't too bad and I had got rid of more than 3000 by setting the opening date of the ledgers that were complained about to an arbitrary early date well before any transactions. This only took me about 2 hours (but I kept asking myself why was I going through this when the consistency checker could have automated it by setting the opening date to the first transaction)... I have a few more issues to resolve: 1)
How do I resolve this, I don't seem to have an "Opening Balances" account? 2)
To go through all 90 odd investments and set the price for the opening date will take take me hours and I can't see any reason to do it when the opening price is already entered in the ledger with the first buy transaction. Has the 4.7.2 consistency checker created issues which it could have simply solved instead of merely announcing them? Am I better just remaining with 4.6.4 or is it possible to get back to 4.7.1 with which I had no problems?

To show the opening balances account, go to Settings and enable "Show equity accounts"
We've changed the consistency checker to fix most of the issues, but we haven't released a version that includes the change yet.

Thanks very much - that worked OK.
Now I've just 89 investment "problems" (which aren’t problems actually). So I will either upgrade to 4.7.2 and ignore the consistency checker output or stay on 4.6.4 (since I can't seem to revert to 4.7.1) and await a version with the fixed checker. Either way no problem. Many thanks for help.
