KMyMoney reports

Thu Nov 13, 2008 4:20 pm
Hello,
New user for KMyMoney2. I dowloaded 0.92 from claydoh's repository. I am running Ubuntu Hardy Heron, gnome.

About a year ago I checked out the finanical programs available in Linux and used Gnucash for about 3 months. It took awhile to get used to the program, but essentially the killer was that it didn't have the reports I needed to see where my money was going. That is the true benefit to these finanical programs, the reports. I remember looking at KMyMoney at that time but it didn't have a budget feature so I didn't use it. I have also used Quicken, although that was several years ago.

So far I have loaded all of my accounts and the last 3 months of data into the program using the OFX import feature from my online accounts. I am still learning how to use the program but so far I do like the ease of use and feature set of the program (e.g., importing data, payees, reports, future transactions, etc.). I haven't tried out the budget feature yet but I certainly plan to.

Again numerous reports that are all very useful. In particular I am looking for a report that shows money in vs. money out for a month. Money in being income received. Money out is to expenses and loans. This way I can see if my total in exceeded my total out for the month. Is there such a report available? I didn't see it.

Also a quick question. I don't know if it is because I using Gnome or because of the program, but there are times when portions of the screen disappear. For example
1) I am editing a transaction and selecting a category. I click on the category menu list. The list shows up. If I click on the menu bar (going up or down one page at a time) then all of the category names appear normally. If I click on the arrow to go up or down one category item at at time, then some of the category items are not visible. It is like there is a small invisible menu screen that is in the foreground of the main screen.
2) I am editing the Payee list getting rid of some of the Payees. The first time I select delete a menu screen opens asking me to confirm. I select yes and the Payee is deleted. I select another Payee and a portion of the Menu screen is not visible. Just like above it seems like there is a small invisible menu screen covering up the screen in the foreground. If I continuously delete Payees this condition continues to happen. If I go do something else in the program and then come back to delete a Payee, the menu screen appears normally.

Thx, bogey

At the moment the only way to get a monthly report is to edit the start and finish date of a report to the first and last days of a month. That will give you what you want.

But in practice if you use an standard income and expenses report, there are totals for income and expenditure for each month and the bottom row is cashflow; so why not just use that?

To select a category, even a sub category, I type a few characters and KMyMoney lists all the categories which have those characters. If necessary I type a few more characters until I have a short list of categories and click on the right one.

Not having deleted any payees, I haven't had your last problem.

The standard income and expense report is very nice, I like that report a lot. Shows where I am spending my money, or better yet where my wife is spending the money!!! She doesn't like that report at all.

True the bottom row is cashflow, but at a glance I can't tell if my cashflow was higher than or less than the amount that went out to loans and credit cards monthly. That is why it would be nice to have a cashflow report.

You mentioned editing the start and end date of a report. Which report are you referring to? Is this a way I can see cashflow monthly or over a defined period of time?

Regarding typing in the categories, that works very nicely and I do not see any blanked out areas on the screen.

In the CVS version you have the CashFlow Summary, which is what you are looking for. That summary has your income and expenses, plus transfers to loans and other non-liquid accouts and transfers to liquid liabilities (credit cards). I believe that is what you are looking for.
Unfortunately, there is still no report to customize that, and you see no detail of that. But we will get there.

If you select an existing report and click New, it will make a copy which you can rename and you will also see a row of editable tabs, including Date.

I've discovered that and wondered why it's not named "Copy". Imho, it would be easier to understand.

It is assumed that you have customized, so it is tagged Custom, instead of Copy. It makes more sense.
You can copy a report, however, and that one is named Copy

Because 'Copy' is already taken for 'Copy to clipboard'. In fact, if you just configure a default report, KMyMoney will create a copy of it for you and appends '(Customized)' to the name of it.

I've seen a very similar problem myself. I'm also using Hardy Heron but, although I have the Gnome desktop installed, I use KMyMoney under KDE - in fact I use KDE in preference to Gnome almost all the time.

I'd put it down to Hardy or, maybe more likely, the fglrx video driver. Of course, if you don't use an ATI video card then it's more likely that Hardy's the culprit.

I use Hardy with the fglrx driver and it does no such thing. I use Kubuntu, not Ubuntu, though.
Do you use Compiz on top of that?

No, I don't use Compiz. My system is based on Ubuntu, not Kubuntu, though. Might that be significant? I'd assumed that the two were almost the same and it was just the KDE desktop and the applications that were different.

I haven't managed to pin-down the exact circumstances under which it happens. I've been importing my Quicken data and found that a favourite time for it to display the problem was when using the bit of the import wizard where the user identifies which KMM account is to be used for the data from each of the Quicken accounts. It would often get to the point where so little of the display was working that it became impossible to see which account was being selected, so the only option was to abort the import and start again. I eventually found that it seemed to happen a lot less if I avoided using the mouse scroll wheel to move through the KMM account list.

Since importing my data I've seen the problem a few times more during normal use of KMM, but not enough to establish a pattern or to prevent me using the application.
