Hi there everyone,

My name is Nathan. I'm a professional designer who makes educational videos for Krita. I got in touch with the developers at the Randa sprint 10 days ago, and we got to work together on KMyMoney’s visual identity. They were looking for a new desktop icon and splash screen first and foremost. Here’s my proposal, reusing the piggy bank idea from the KDE visual design group, with a more unified color palette, and a simpler design:

Image

It is just a static image with some space for the developers to put some useful text, being a tip of the day, some info about the program version, online news…
Now, if I got it correctly, they are porting the whole UI code from HTML to QML, meaning it’s probably going to be the right time to try to improve KMyMoney’s UI, be it visually or functionally speaking. I just started using it myself. beyond typography and colors, it’ll take me a little while to start helping. But I just wanted to open up a thread so that some discussion could take place.

Thank you for reading, and have a nice day!

The icon and colours are nice, but please we are not all in the US, why don't put something else (a 'K'?) instead of the Dollar $
Thanks!

Well, we had this discussion before, but what makes you think of the US (only)? A dollar is used in many more countries around the globe. Using a simple command on the KMyMoney sources yields the following list of those countries known to KMymoney:
Code: Select all
ipwizard$ grep -i dollar kmymoney/views/kmymoneyview.cpp | cut -d'"' -f4
Australian Dollar
Bahamian Dollar
Barbados Dollar
Belize Dollar
Bermudian Dollar
Brunei Dollar
Canadian Dollar
Cayman Islands Dollar
East Caribbean Dollar
Fiji Dollar
Guyanan Dollar
Hong Kong Dollar
Jamaican Dollar
Liberian Dollar
Namibian Dollar
New Zealand Dollar
Singapore Dollar
Solomon Islands Dollar
Taiwan Dollar
Trinidad and Tobago Dollar
US Dollar
Zimbabwe Dollar

Your point is valid though. One could use a non-existant symbol.

We discussed that with the devs at Randa. We gave the K a try, as it's also used in the program's name. It is not super suggestive, and hard to balance visually. That was the main proposal in the visual design group, and we agreed to move away from it.
The dollar is a well-known symbol, worldwide. Basically, my goal is just that when you show the logo to someone, they can guess that it's about money and savings (especially if they've never heard about the program). So far, it seems to work, but we'll definitely need more people to look at it. I'm from France by the way, so the dollar is not my currency either.
