If I have investments that are owned in multiple accounts (for example, a retirement and non-retirement account), is it possible to "share" the investment? By share, I mean have one equity that can be in two separate accounts.
Currently, I have duplicate investments, and I'd like to eliminate them if possible. It seems that investments / equities are unique to each investment account. |

Yes. Define the investment anywhere you want, and you can add "Buy" transactions in any investment account as long as it has the same currency.

UPDATE
My issue came from having updated the accounts online - the online updates created the securities in each account. Each security had the same symbol and name, which created the duplicates. Dealing with the duplicates was a bit confusing (for me) because it was never clear which security was which. My solution was to go into each account and rename the security symbol in an account-specific way, which made it clear which security was which. I was then able to pick one of the securities, add it to each account, replace all the existing transactions with the chosen security. My ultimate goal was to eliminate the duplicates from the master list of securities, but at first I was unable to delete the duplicates. To do this, I had to 1. remove all transactions for that security from all accounts; 2. delete that security from the account; and 3. remove all price updates for that security. After performing all these steps, it is possible to delete the security. ----- Thanks for the reply. That is not the behavior that I am getting. When trying to add an investment defined in another account, I will get an error message that the security is not a sub-account, and I have not figured out how to add an existing investment to that account. I also have not figured out a way to edit the investments that would make them sub-accounts of multiple accounts. The "securities" tab shows a list of all the investments across all the accounts, but I cannot create a new security there. The only place I can create a new investment is within a specific account, and then I cannot share it with other accounts. Maybe I'm doing something incorrectly? How does it work for you? |

Hi nathanc,
You said: I was then able to pick one of the securities, add it to each account. How did you add it to an account? Also, you said: remove all price updates for that security What are the steps for looking at/removing price updates? Thanks! |
