Hi!

I've been using KmyMoney for a number of years to keep track of family (personal) finances. Now I need to create a new one (due to changed family cicrumstances and a large file). What I would like to do is to truncate the existing bigger file and start a new one from, let's say September 1st 2017. How can I do that without starting from scratch? I tried exporting the account plan, but I cannot import it to a new blank file (it is greyed out).

Grateful for any advice! This is a great piece of software!!

Magnus, that seems to be easy. Here's how I would try to solve the task:
  1. Take the old file and make a copy into the new file. Don't touch the old file anymore beyond this point and only use the new file. In case something goes wrong, you can always come back to this point and restart.
  2. Load the new file into KMyMoney.
  3. Create a networth report by year including all transactions (dates) to verify numbers later on
  4. Get the balance of all accounts on the date prior to your new start. If you want to start September 1st 2017 that would be August 31st 2017. You can possibly use the Account Balances by Type report and adjust the To date to August 31st 2017. Keep the numbers for all accounts.
  5. Clear all transactions in all acccounts up to August 31st 2017. Select the last transaction in the ledger for August 31st 2017 and press Shift+Home to select all prior transactions. Press Del to get rid of them in one shot. This assumes that the ledger is sorted in ascending post date order.
  6. Enter the ending balances determined in step 4 as opening balance for all accounts.
  7. Create a networth report by year including all transactions (dates) and check that the numbers are identical to the ones of the report created in step 3. Some might be missing due to the fact that you wiped some data in step 5.
  8. Fix any possibly issues so that those numbers match!
I hope that makes sense.

Hi!

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

However, I run into one of those odd problems. THere are two accounts I cannot delete - how come? What can I check?

Why do you want to delete an account? I was talking about deleting transactions. Or do you mean you cannot delete transaction in those accounts? Anyway, the account is referenced somewhere, so it cannot be deleted.

Hi!

I want to delete bank accounts that does not exist anymore... What does "referenced somewhere" mean in KMyMoney? I mean, what should I search for?

From what I remember it checks if the account has active splits (transactions). They might be hidden due to filter settings and the ledger seems to be empty while it is not.
