Hello,
I am starting KMyMoney today and have run into a snag. I cannot put any balance into the Category/Expense accounts of my checkbook. That section is grayed out. I downloaded the manual, but couldn't find how to fix this. Can you please help? Thank you for your support! dchristianson |

I have version 4.6.6 and in the "Category/Account/Expense" view. When right-clicking/edit category on a line item expense, the "balance" box is locked.
Thank you!!!! |

Ah, that is a rather old version. Try to upgrade to 4.8 or greater. The problem has been solved by removing the widget from that editor. But I cannot remember which version that happened in.
Why do you want to setup an opening balance for an income/expense category?

Thank you for clearing things up. Unfortunately, 4.6.6 is the latest version in the Linux Mint repositories.
When I get paid, I post deposits to all my expense accounts (categories). Then as I pay bills, I subtract from said accounts. I was able to start my bank account with my current balance, but that was all. That balance then needs to be divided and put into all the sub-accounts. Does that make sense? Thank you for all your help!!! |

DId you have a chance to read Making the most of KMyMoney which provides a bit of information about how to use the application?

I did read it quickly this morning, but read it again just now. It seems that I have to have sub-accounts in my Assets department in order to have a balance, not my Expenses department, but that's where they were by default. I'm wondering how the balance is calculated if there's no value to start with?

Usually you setup the opening balance for your assets and liabilities but not your incomes and expenses. After that, you enter all the transactions and assign those to the income and expense categories. That's it.
