I'm a newbie to KMyMoney after migrating from Quicken. I love the software--especially being able to select the same payee and assign the category in just a few clicks. I would like to modify some of the reports to show less detail and "just the facts."

For example, on the Transaction by Category report I would just like to see the category and the total. I have got all the extra fields turned off to get as close as I can but I don't need the dates to show and just want a summary of the categories. Is there anyway to create this report. Originally, the report for CY18 was 64 pages and I now have it down to 32 pages but it really should only be a 2 or 3 page report total to help me with my taxes. I exported the report to a CSV and it was going to take some time to get that report simplified. Is there any easy way to do what I want? The other "Gnu" software does what I want but I can't mass edit the transactions to assign categories.

Did you try to create an income/expense report? That might be what you are looking for.
