Is it possible to import the categories exported from another kMyMoney database into a new database? I created a test kMyMoney database, did a bunch of testing with it and want to use the list of categories I created in it to populate a new kMyMoney database without all the test transactions in it. Files/Export/CSV will let me export the categories into a .csv list, but I haven't found any way to import these categories into my new database.

Yes, use the File/Export/Account Template and File/Import/Account Template for it.It might be, that the template needs to be stored in ~/.local/share/kmymoney/templates before it will be available to KMyMoney. The template is a simple XML file which you can edit between export and import using your favorite editor.
Hope that helps. p.s. This feature seems to be undocumented.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I'm working on a python filter for account spreadsheets from my bank and keep finding more ways that the bank's exported csv files need tweaking prior to import. Being able to export/import categories will save a good bit of time when starting over with a fresh database.

If there is anything we can do to improve the existing CSV importer please let us know. Do you know, that we have a contrib part in the tarball where we keep user provided special support tool for KMyMoney (such as yours) so that others can benefit from your work .

I think I accepted the answer too soon - the export of the account template works and produces a nice xml file containing the categories, but import/account template just pops up the dialog for selecting one of the predefined sets of categories with no option for selecting a template to import. I tried both selecting 'no categories' and 'basic categories', but it doesn't progress on to letting me select an account template to import.

Which version of KMyMoney did you use (which operating system might also be important). I just tried it with 5.0.8 on Linux and everything is working fine.
