All categories formed as Income, when expense was selected

I'm a new user. I found importing a QIF from Quicken 2017 (which I currently use) flooded me with data I'd have to edit. Starting afresh with transactions from the beginning of the year.

Have successfully added my most-active checking and savings accounts. Trying to manually enter the transactions from Jan 3 (my primary checking reconcile date). KMyMoney asks for the category for each transaction, as expected, however when the field to select between an income and expense category comes up, and I select Expense, all of the categories still show as Income when I click on the Categories icon on the left of the UI. I tried to edit them, but the Category Type field shows Income and is grayed out. Go to the Hierarchy tab and only Income appears.

I have done this exercise twice using only page 1 of 8 pages of January transactions I have to enter.

How can I set up, and edit, these categories as expenses?

In order to check/duplicate the problem: which version of KMyMoney are you using under which operating system?

I think I found the problem: the hierarchy is fixed and cannot be changed in the dialog. You can only change the type but not the parent account.
Howto get around it: before entering the new category into the transaction editor select the Withdrawal tab just above the transaction form. This will make it an expense. Check for the parent account in the hierarchy tab of the category editor.

Howto fix your already entered data:
  1. Create the correct expense category manually using the category view. You can use the same name as for the income category.
  2. Select the false income category in the category view. Double click it. This will open the ledger and show all transaction referencing it
  3. Use Ctrl+A to select all transactions
  4. Use the context menu (Right mouse button) and select 'Move transactions to...'
  5. Select the newly created expense category from the tree
  6. Switch back to the category view
  7. Delete the false income category
  8. Repeat the above for other categories of the wrong type
Hope that helps.

5.0.6 on Win 10 Pro 64, build 18362 (which is up to date, according to the settings.)

I stumbled across roughly the same workaround. Couldn't edit the "income" category but at the main category view I could right-click on Expense and create a category that way. Used the same name as the "income" category and then could, after a few pop ups, delete the old category.

As I enter my Quicken transactions manually, I'll need to create the categories before I enter the transactions.

What's "broke" is apparently the "new category" pop up that comes up directly from the transaction entry.

Thanks for quick reply!
