Hello,
I am a long time KDE user but my primary system had been MacOS for the last 12 years. Linux was a sidekick. Now that I've fully migrated to Linux, there are a few apps that I need replacements for. One of them is iFinance (https://www.syniumsoftware.com/de/ifinance). I have the following questions for a start : 1. Can kMyMoney download the balance from Paypal accounts, and if not, is this planned? 2. How about balance of credit cards like Airplus, Amazon, etc? If not by API, maybe using a generic web scraping plugin? 3. Can kMyMoney split transactions so a single transaction can have multiple categories? 4. How do I automate the download of new transactions for all accounts so it happens regularly? Thank you! |

Hello ipwizard,
thank you! Your answers give me a little more confidence that kmymoney may be the right tool for me. I also managed to set up at least my two bank accounts already. I have to follow up on some of your answers though. 1. Regarding Paypal setup, I can not find anything related to it in KMyMoney 5.1 setup. I know there is an aqbanking module called aqpaypal, but I also cannot find this anywhere. Where do I create a Paypal account in kMyMoney which syncs with my online Paypal account? 2. Can external web scraping scripts be integrated into kMyMoney as a data import option? This would have the benefit of much more automation especially if you have multiple non-FinTS capable online accounts, because the CSV import really has a lot of manual steps to go through. Some more new questions (I experimented a little): 3. In the ledger view ("Kontenbuch"), and other similar views, is it possible to put categories, keywords and notes in their own columns (with optional word wrap), so I can sort and filter according to those properties? 4. Can I create my own reports? I can customize the existing ones, but can I create totally new ones too? 5. Double clicking on a category in the category view will show the ledger view with all transactions filtered by this category, which is nice. But there seems to be no obvious way to reset this view again to show all transactions. Did I miss it? 6. Does kMyMoney have an option to reformat ALL CAPS booking descriptions and names to be more readable (= First Letter Caps Only)? I could not find anything like that. 7. Does kMyMoney have an option to comment transactions, independent of their (bank supplied) description and source/payee? This is especially important for me since I have used this iFinance feature extensively, and don't want to lose all my comments. Thank you! |

1. KMyMoney has a generic/abstract interface to AqBanking and it does not matter if the backend is FinTS, OFX or Paypal. One needs to setup the Paypal account in AqBanking. The respective AqBanking functionality can be found in Settings/Configure AqBanking.... Once that is present, you need to map the KMyMoney account to this AqBanking account using Account/Map account
2. The only way I could think of is to use the QIF importer's capability to call a filter script. 3. Not in the current implementation 4. Yes. You need to extend the existing C++ source code for this to happen, though 5. All transactions of what? You can use a) the account combo box at the top to select the ledger for an account b) use the accounts view and double click on an account to open c) use the home view and click on an account 6. No, may be worth to open a wishlist item on our bug-tracker. This is probably also useful as an option for statement import. 7. You can edit the memo field and add to it. Use Shift+Enter to get a new line in the memo field.

Hi,
thanks again 1. it seems that the kMyMoney distribution packages do not include aqBanking with Paypal support. Let's see if I can repackage it. 2. that would be cumbersome. I'll write a wishlist bug report. 3. see 2. 4. Let's see how far we can get with the current reports. 5. OK, found it. (Not too intuitive IMHO.. but makes sense) 6. see 2. 7. I did (this is also how I configured the CSV import for iFinance). However, the recipient/description field also needs to be separated for me to sensibly import my data. I'll file a wishlist bug and hope for the best. Thanks! |
