Edit memorized transaction values

Tue Feb 09, 2021 5:55 am
I have looked over the all the menus in KMyMoney, and even the user guide for KMyMoney looking for a way to change the contents and values in a memorized transaction, but have yet to locate the answer I'm looking for. Is it even possible to change these values? If so, how? Thanks for your help!

What do you refer to as 'memorized transaction'? KMyMoney knows about regular transactions in the ledger and scheduled transactions (mostly recurring ones). Is it one of those two?

When you select a Payee, it automatically brings up the memorized information like the category, memo, and amount. I want to change those from what is memorized.

Looks like you found a bug. This used to work but is somewhat broken right now.

I investigated this a bit more (and it does not seem to be a bug): when looking at the transactions within the payees view what is shown in the Account column? I can see three cases
  1. A category
KMyMoney will open the ledger for the category but you cannot edit it because the current version of KMyMoney does not support editing in the ledger of a category.
  2. An account
In that case you are not allowed to modify the transaction if the account is closed. In case it is open you can edit the transaction.
Does any of that match your case?

No, it does not match my situation. The account is not a closed account. The account I have this problem with is an open and active checking account.

The Payee is a long time payee. Verizon Wireless. However over time, the category has changed. We used to have our wireless telephones there. So Telephone was a correct category. We have changed our phones to another carrier. All we have with Verizon is a Hum for one of our vehicles. So I'm wanting to change the memorized category from Telephone to Auto:Hum so I don't have to type over it next time. And of course, the amount paid for the telephone bills used to be much larger than the small amount we pay for the Hum. However, KMyMoney always brings up the higher memorized amount. The amount we pay for the Hum service is always the same.

I wish I could go in and edit the memorized Category and the memorized Amount so that I don't have to change that every time.

Does that help explain the details any better?

Now I understand what you mean by "memorized transaction". I have a few more questions: which version of KMyMoney do you use? Which operating system do you have? What is the setting of the autofill option (see manual)?

I am asking, because we have fixed a problem in that area which might hit you.

I have found that if you have a default category set for the payee, it will override changes you make to categories in the ledger when you enter a new transaction and select a prior transaction with the changed category from the drop-down box.

Is that what you are experiencing?

I am using KMyMoney Version 5.1.1-988b97edc.

I am running Windows 10.

The autofill option is set to "With previously most often used transaction for the payee"

Yes, indeed! I set a default category for the Payee and now that comes up like I want it to. Now if I could just get the amount to come up to the last transaction entered in the Register...

Try setting it to "Same transaction ....". In your case, KMyMoney should present you a dialog with the recent transactions to this payee and you can select the right one.

I would just set it up as a scheduled transaction. That will get you the category and amount you want. If amount varies each month, you can check the appropriate box during seup.

Yes, indeed! I think the setting for Same as last transaction works best for me.

As for the idea of a scheduled transaction, that won't work as we want to. We pay all of our bills at the beginning of the month. So we have several future dates. It's just easier for us to do that. Scheduling them would mean more tinkering with settings as to when the ledger entry shows up, and when the amount of the bill is subtracted from our total so we know how much discretionary money we have for the rest of the month.

I think things are working great now, and we should be ready to rock and roll every time with KMyMoney now. It's a great piece of software and is more than satisfactory as a replacement for the Intuit Quicken software. I just now found out it's no longer standalone software and requires a subscription. And they provide no means to backlevel data files to an older standalone version. I'm very happy I found KMyMoney waiting for me.

Thanks for all your time and assistance researching my questions!!!!!
