Using AppImage on a permanent basis

Sun Mar 28, 2021 8:13 am
Recently I had cause to run/use AppImage ( https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/KMyM ... 4.AppImage ) and it was a straight forward task to 'install'. Now I would like to use it on a permanent basis.

The Plasma desktop properties has a command
Code: Select all
kmymoney %u
and the path is /usr/share/applications . I have copied the AppImage big long filename to the ~/KMyMoney path , so I assume all I do is to modify the path to ~/KMyMoney and the command to
Code: Select all
KMyMoney-5.1.1-6bd4987-x86_64.AppImage
is that correct ?

Or should it have the parameter, like
Code: Select all
KMyMoney-5.1.1-6bd4987-x86_64.AppImage %u
?

Of course I could rename the file "KMyMoney-5.1.1-6bd4987-x86_64.AppImage" to "KMyMoney_Build#795" or similar. In terms of stability, is it okay to use the very latest, or take the "play it safe" road and use an earlier version ?

Currently running Kubuntu 22.04, Plasma 5.24.4, Frameworks 5.92.0, Qt 5.15.3, kernel 5.15.0-46-generic (64-bit), GeForce 840M Graphics

Having %u allows to drop a file onto the icon on the desktop and the program will open it. See freedesktop.org for details.

Regarding the version: the AppImages available on https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/KMyM ... age_Build/ are build daily and contain the current stable branch, that is the latest release plus any fixes since then. It is safe to use them as much as the released version.
