Looking for reporting help.

Fri Nov 19, 2021 11:43 pm
I have several questions about reports.
1) Even though I have checked the box that says "Do not show zero balance equities", all of the equities that I have ever bought appear in the "holdings by account" report. I would think that the default here would be only investments that are currently "held".
2) If I want to know what by current capital gain status is for all of my holdings in an account, I would think that I would choose "all dates" in the Configure which to me means from the time of purchase through *today*. But no, "all dates" covers the shorter time from the earliest purchase through the last transaction in that account. This is in the "Investment Capital Gains by Account".
3) I know this is probably an easy question, but I cannot find the "report configuration" page where you can choose "Rows/Columns Text etc"
4) Finally, I would like a report that combines all stocks in all accounts and shows today's gain as well as the total gain/loss as an amount as well as a percent.
5) Wait, another "finally"; the default "fraction" in the stock edit page should not be 100, it should be 10000. This will stop newbies such as myself from having to go back and reenter transactions with the accurate number of shares.
Thanks to any and all who have ideas that help. A

Concerning point 1: At the beginning of the year (and after having done my taxes), I close all investments with a zero balance. That makes them go away from reports as well.

Thanks for the response, Zebulon. Can you be explicit in what you mean about "closing an investment" ? When I sell all of my shares of the investment, isn't that closing it? If I have to remove it (and I guess that could be done in the "securities list" by clicking Delete in the right hand upper corner) am I losing those historical data? So, if after many years of getting in and out of a position, I might want to know how well I have done with regard to that stock. But are those data lost by deleting the security?
My main complaint is that if I want to see what Securities are currently being held, I don't want to see the ones that I have completely sold out.

No. To close it, right-click it in the accounts section and select the Close Account option near the bottom of the menu.

I think we are comparing apples and oranges here. You mentioned in your first response that you closed an investment. That led to me asking a few questions about that response. Now you are talking about closing an account. This is confusing to us newbies; "accounts" vs "an investment". Thanks again for willing to help.

Your reply would have been very different had you actually tried what I said. Also, if you read the KMM manual intro, you will see that anything that holds a value, and that can be transacted, qualifies as an account. So, yes, KMM treats an investment as an account on its own. That is why it shows up in the account tree.

I beg a thousand pardons your excellency, for my apparent incompetence. Since you did not address my concern about losing the historical data related to that "account", I was trying to elicit more information. I didn't want to "actually try" deleting the investment if it meant regretting it in the future when I wanted to look back at summaries. Again, thanks for your reply.

I never said or even suggested you had to delete the investment. I only used the word 'close.' Besides, you cannot delete any investment or account unless you have previously deleted all of its transactions.

My mistake. I will give it a try.

Ok, for those who are also having problems with this, I have found the problem. Zebulon's method above works but *only* if you do not have a check mark in the filter box "Do not show zero-balance equities" (Settings > Configure KMyMoney > General > Filter) Even though we are trying to not show these equities, you have to uncheck that box so that they show up in the Accounts list. Then you can right click on them and close them one by one.
