Hello --
I began my KMM experience by importing Quicken-exported data (QIF) beginning 1/1/2021. I am satisfied with how my accounts look after importing that file. My Quicken data began in 1998. I want to load KMM with the Quicken-exported QIF data prior to 1/1/2021. This data contains very few investment transactions. Questions: Can I simply import that file? Or, must some other processing of that file be performed, or precautions be taken? Are there any additional backup steps to take in case the import of the earlier data messes up my 2021 data and I want to return to my 2021 data set, lick my wounds and figure out what went wrong? Thanks for any suggestions and information about this issue. Stephen Mehl |

A couple of things cross my mind. a) make a backup of your data-file, b) to be on the 100% safe side also make a backup of your settings (all files in ~/.config/kmymoney).
After that, give it a go. Importing QIF may require to setup a matching QIF-Profile. Once the import is finished, it could be, that KMyMoney contains transactions in accounts before the opening date of that account. In that case, adjust the opening date to a date prior to the first transaction imported/to be imported. Also, you have to be careful about the opening balances. In case you have accounts that show an opening balance for 1/1/2021 and import transactions prior to that date, the opening balance is not correct anymore. Adjust data and amount accordingly. In case anything goes wrong, copy your backup and start afresh.

To add my 2 cents worth, you adjust the opening date by clicking on "Edit Account". The Date is on the "General" page. As a side note, the fourth tab "Tax" is where you can toggle this account being included in tax reports. Also, since a stock is considered an account in KMM, sometimes you have to second-mouse-button click on the security in the Investment list and do a "manual price update" if it needs a starting value. FInally, since the csv file is straight ascii, I like to edit it with a text editor to clean up obvious problems. If KMM gives you an unintelligible error message, edit the csv file to remove the lines that might be a problem. Try importing again and if successful, manually enter the data you deleted. If still fails, delete the next best guess for the offending lines. Rinse and repeat. One last complaint in this regard, some institutions capitalize the extension CSV, and KMM does not see that. It recognizes only "csv". That should be fixed, imho. A |

Valid point, but this thread is about QIF not CSV
