What an I doing wrong?

I switched from Quicken to KMyMoney at the beginning of the year. It was shaky at first, but I was always able Reconcile with my Credit Union balances. However, there is always a problem with inter-account transfers. I have a Savings and Checking account with the same bank. I download the last months OFX data from my credit union an import into KMM. All the transfer transactions from Savings to Checking show up twice in the register. As both a withdrawal and a deposit. ???

Say the savings account has $10,000 and I transfer $2,000 to checking. When I download the OFX transactions, the Savings register shows the Withdrawal transaction of $2,000 with a balance of $,8,000, Then the next transaction is the same information but as a Deposit of $2,000 bring the balance back up to $10,000. The Category field shows the account transferred to -- The checking account number.

I only noticed this behavior recently, but suspect my ignorance of using the software is a factor.

Perhaps someone can instruct me on how this should be set up using 3 accounts (below) ??? with the same bank? For a transfer in the register, what would be listed as "PAYEE", and "CATEGORY"?

01 SAVINGS. (All income enter into this account and then is transferred out to the other two.)
02 CHECKING
03 MONEY MARKET.

I hope some one can help me so I don't have to go back to Quicken.

"I hope some one can help me so I don't have to go back to Quicken."

You sound like me. For some reason this group reminds me of a support group like Alcoholics Anonymous! :-)
"Hi, my name is Sam and I don't want to go back to Quicken". <all> "Hi, Sam".

In order to try to duplicate your problem, I went into my Bank accounts tonight and transferred $150 from Checking to Savings. I cannot do an OFX download until the transfer is completed. It says "pending". I will get back to you when I have completed the d'load -- unless one of the gurus on this site knows what your problem is. Night.

Maybe, you're not doing anything wrong but KMyMoney does not work as expected. To figure out, please let us know which O/S you are using and which version of KMyMoney you run. Does the OFX download include both accounts? OFX files are XML formatted and pretty much readable by humans. Just in case you want to take a look.

We'll get you there. And in case it's a software problem, we'll just fix it, one of the big benefits of open source o)

I would definitely inspect that OFX file. KMyMoney does not generate transactions all by itself. There might be some misinterpretation of the OFX file content, or the file might be incorrect.

My first suspicion is that you are downloading both accounts in one OFX/QFX file and it is confusing KMM, as IPWizard alluded to.
I downloaded the QFX file from my bank's checking account. Imported it to KMM. Then edited the entry to make the Category = my Savings account (With "Pay TO" as the toggle) and it was correctly recorded in the two accounts.
As the other two experts mentioned above, look at the OFX file with a text editor to see if anything looks untoward. There is a description of the file format at http://www.ofx.net/
