Hello,

Actually a very basic transaction.
Despite that I have a question how I can enter a money transfer from A) Checking accnt. at Bank-A to B) savings accnt. at Bank-B? (Type of entry Transfer)
I'm a little bit confused abut the two fields "from' and 'Transfer from'.
It appears that the values in field 'from' are all payees' , not any other of my accounts, what I would expect I could select here.
In the field 'Transfer from ' however I can see and select any of my accounts.
It seems to me that it would makes more sense to have the fields A) 'Transfer from' and B) 'Category' (of transfer, e.g. Annual Contribution, specials savings etc.)

Any Comments or suggestions?

"From/To" serves to indicate who initiated the transfer or who is the beneficiary. Since I only manage my own accounts, I always leave it blank. If you do that, the ledger will display the account transferred from/to.

In my understanding 'from' means where is something coming from (who is the sender).
If I want to note who initiated the transfer, I would enter it in the note field. because, assume this is a person, the initiator is not necessary the 'sender'.

I still think if the fields would be called 'transfer from' and 'category' would hit the nail on the head on this type of transaction.

Yes, that is correct: "From" indicates who is the sender. There is a field called "Transfer From" -- it becomes "Transfer To" for an outgoing transfer, and it indicates the account the sender is using.

You can only transfer cash; so there is no category. Defining a category "transfer" seems strange because it is both an expense and an income.

Well, the category could be something like 'Annual TFSA contribution' or 'Casino wins" etc. , and from would be e.g. a savings- or checking account.
However, the 'from' selection is filled with data from the payees list. And that doesn't make any sense to me.
Usually on a Investment account there are only other (cash) accounts or the broker account involved. But not Payees I'm coming across when purchasing things.

Still remains a mystery.

In case filling the payee does not make sense simply leave it empty. Leaving the category empty with an amount entered creates an unbalanced transaction and your books will be off. BTW: the from/to and transfer differentiation has been removed in future versions of the application already. The amount can either be entered as either a payment or deposit (two separate input fields) which should make that clearer to the user.

Thanks for your feedback.
I consider that as good news (the changes in a future version).
Is there a version number for these changes available, which Appimage version perhaps?

Cheers

PS. is there a change log available for each Appimage version?

For KMyMoney, two AppImages are build on a daily basis: the stable version (off the 5.1 source code branch) and the development version (off the master source code branch). For general use we only recommend the stable version. The adventurous user may want to try the development version on a backup of his data. It is just not tested well enough yet.

Besides that, the AppImage generation has been moved to a new environment by the KDE sysadmin team lately. We are still struggling to get all the features working. That applies to both, stable and development version.

Wrt to a change log: the commit history for stable and development is what we have right now. Also, you could see which bugs have been fixed in the stable branch since the last release (version 5.1.2 atm). In general, they are also fixed in the development version, at least in case they apply. Hope that helps.
