how to use a 'gift card' account

Sun Feb 06, 2022 5:55 pm
Hello
looking for some feedback/advice.
How can I use a 'gift card' instead of a bank account for my expenses.
The gift card is not related to a bank institution.
I tried to add the gift card as an asset account but it asking me to which bank it belongs.
If I enter the expenses as cash or on a bank account it messes up the balances on those accounts.

Any ideas?

Any reply much appreciated.

and another aspect in this context is...

what if a receipt for expenses is split up in partial paid from a gift card and a remainder from a Creditcard account.
How would I split this transaction up?

Nasty, isn't it?

Regarding the assignment of an institution: leave it blank. There's no need to assign an asset account to an institution.

Regarding the split between credit-card and gift-card accounts proceed as follows:
  • open the ledger for the credit-card account
  • Start entering a new transaction
  • Enter the amount you paid from the card (not the full expense amount)
  • Enter the expense category
  • Start the split editor
  • Increase the amount of the expense to the full amount on the receipt. This will leave the difference as unassigned amount.
  • Create another split with the gift-card account as category
  • Enter the difference as negative amount (the unassigned amount should be zero)
  • Save the splits and transaction

At a closer look it's more complicated as it appeared first.

The situation I'm facing is as follow:
There are 3 items purchased with different expense categories (incl. taxes) and a portion of the whole purchases has been paid with a gift card and the remainder with a CC.

I think the easiest way (IMHO) would be to be able to enter the full receipt (split up on categories) and than transfer the 'gift' portion from the credit card account to the 'gift card' account. But maybe my thinking is too demanding.
(If I would encounter the above challenge in one of my projects I would it design that way.)

Perhaps this scenario is even too demanding to have it as a straight solution in KMM (out of scope of KMM) ;)

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion ipwizard.

You can do all that with KMyMoney in one transaction. Just add more splits. It seems complicated, but once you understand the mechanics behind it, it becomes logical.

But you could also add a second transaction that transfers funds from the gift card to the credit card account.
