I wonder if there is a way to create a report that reflects the total value of my holdings in American Unicorn Saddles (AUS) along with other investments. The only thing that comes close is the built-in report "Investment Holdings by Type", but this (a) still keeps the holdings on separate lines, and (b) does not subtotal by Stock.
Thanks to any and all who contribute an idea and Happy Mardi Gras! A |

There is no ROWS/COLUMNS tab where you can select ORGANIZE BY on the investment reports. I have also found this to be a shortcoming.
I believe the only way to accomplish what you want is to produce the INVESTMENT HOLDINGS BY ACCOUNT standard report and then select the EXPORT button on the output to further process the data externally to the program. If the ORGANIZE BY option was added to investment reports, it would be easy to do what you want. |

Thanks for the reply, Mark. I am not sure, but I suspect that the root of this problem is that if I buy 100 shares of AUS in a Schwab account and also buy 100 shares in my tdAmeritrade account, KMM does not recognize those two purchases as being the same stock. in other words, I have to enter the stock symbol etc for both separately as if they were different companies. (I mean, c'mon, how many companies are needed to make saddles for unicorns!? )

What you say is not necessarily true. If you are not careful, you can end up creating 2 distinctly different entries for the same security. Here are the instructions (directly from the KMyMoney handbook) for entering a security which will avoid creating multiple versions of the same security: "When you add a security to an investment account, and that security already exists in another investment account, you need to be careful if you want to reuse it rather than creating a new, duplicate security. When you see the New Investment Wizard, after selecting the type of investment and clicking Next, you need to be sure the Full Name field is empty before entering the Trading Symbol. When you hit Tab, if KMyMoney already has a security using that symbol, it will ask if you wish to reuse it. If you click Yes, it will fill in the rest of that dialog, and you can then just click Next." |

I'll give you partial credit for that solution, Mark. IMHO, it is too delicate an operation. I know what the manual says is correct, but it should not be that sensitive. For example, in the first place when the New Investment Wizard (NIW) comes up in response to your having typed the name of the stock in the BUY ledger,, it has already populated the NAME field. And you are correct, if you don't erase that it will not look for the same investment after you type the symbol. Furthermore, let's say you erase the name, then type in the symbol, if you use the mouse to get to the next field - no joy! OR if you click on the number of decimal places first, no joy. That is too restrictive. Why not simply compare the stock symbols of two entries and if they are the same then put up a window asking the user.
A follow-up question is how do I go back now, now that I have lived a profligate life of willy-nilly clicking before tabbing in stock entry mode, go back to tell KMM that AUS in Schwab is the same AUS in tdAmeritrade? As usual, thanks for your input. I am a very dedicated KMM user now and I really really want to help make it better. Atheist |

I never said I like how it works. I would also like to see a more intuitive solution. I can't imagine why the current behavior was chosen. Who would have a use for saving multiple different copies of the same security and the need to update the same prices multiple times?
When I saw that I was creating a duplicate security after having just entered it moments before in another account, I researched how to prevent a pending mess. I didn't have to fix my data so I can't tell you what I did to fix it. I can imagine 2 options to fix your data and they are both not fun. Let's see if Ipwizard has a trick to fix the situation that is less painful and possibly less risky than the options I might suggest. |
