Manually entering stock prices

Sat Feb 26, 2022 2:31 am
This is a resurrection of a previous post by MDolnik from almost two years ago. Cf: viewtopic.php?f=69&t=165308&p=430514&hilit=KMyMoney+import+stock+prices#p430510

The problem is that even though KMM implies that you can update a range of quotes for a stock, the reality is that only the current price is fetched online.

I took an easier path than the one above since I was missing only a few months for two stocks. Basically, I wanted to externally download a range of stock quotes and then use a CSV import to get them into KMM. What I learned from MDolnik is that the ASCII quotes file can be easily obtained by using this URL.
https://query1.finance.yahoo.com/v7/fin ... ts=history

The three variables are the stock symbol (here it is bgcp for BGC Partners) and the start and end dates that delineate the range. Those times have to be entered as a unix time stamp; available here: http://www.unixtimestamp.com. (For those of you with a mathematical bent this is equal to the number of seconds wasted by users of other money-management software times the daily average number of people reading their horoscopes!) Paste that ito your browser URL address line and the file will be automatically downloaded.

Then it is a simple matter to import that CSV file into KMM. Column 1 is the date and #5 is the closing price. Assign it to the pre-existing stock and voila! Import.
I am writing this for two reasons. (1) there may be others like me who need to fill in a gap and (2) If there is something I have overlooked, I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks

Very interesting.

Manual price entry is as crude as can be in KMyMoney. The normal window to enter prices does not even allow for the retention of an entered date when you are entering prices for a specific date for multiple securities. The Portfolio window in Quicken was a much more elegant way to manually enter prices and see the implications of those prices.

Any more detailed description to fix this deficiency would be very welcome.

More detailed description:
If you want to enter security prices manually from a brokerage monthly statement, there is no convenient way to do so in the program. In my case, the brokerage house divides it's monthly statement into sections by investment types (Stocks, Foreign Stocks, Mutual Funds, and Exchange Traded Funds, among other examples) and month end prices appear in the appropriate sections.
The best way to enter these month end prices into the program seems to be:
1) Select the INVESTMENTS icon on the left panel;
2) Select an account from the drop down list;
3) Right click on a Security and select "Manual price update...";
4) Enter a price and date in the dialog box;
5) Repeat for each security in each account EXCEPT NOTE THAT DATE reverts back to last "stored" date for each new manual price entry. This date has to keep being overridden to the statement date being entered. If you forget to override the date, you destroy the last "stored" entry from the previous statement, since the "stored" date will be from the last time you entered prices.

I came to KMyMoney from Quicken and Quicken had a much more elegant way to manually enter prices. In Quicken, you had a Portfolio view which displayed a table listing all accounts and the securities in each account. You could customize which accounts and securities appeared in the view. The view defaulted to today's date but you could enter any date in a single box and that date would control the view. You then would go down the table entries and simply enter the price and the program updated price and date accordingly. It took one entry and not all the extra selections and clicks required by KMyMoney to accomplish the same thing. An extra bonus was that you could configure additional calculated fields to display that could show "% change from last price", "YTD change", "total value of security", "total cost of security" etc.

While I started this thread with the subject line "Manually entering....", let's not overlook the glaring need for a built-in ability to automatically update historic prices online.
I agree that from time to time you might want to correct one stock price on one date manually (as outlined above, choose investments, account, right-click on stock, stand on left foot, hop) by far and away, the user should be able to (as one example) choose a stock and have its price history from the time of purchase with one click. To all involved, thanks again for a wonderful program that freed me from the clutches of....

Agree that price import has room for improvement, especially the inability to import historic prices or prices from a specific date.

Other than the few price graphs in the Reports section, the program does not give much opportunity to see the impact of prices. I cannot easily view the value of investments on a specific date even after entering prices for that date.

I agree with Markhm that the reporting of historic prices needs improvement. I always hesitate to suggest any need for improvement because 1) as a relative newcomer to the KMM scene, I worry that I just have not looked hard enough to find out what's available and 2) since the movers and shakers of KMM are not being paid for their work, I hesitate to add to their burdens.
I wonder if there is a way to have user-shared reporting ideas. I mean the potential for most reports is there, it just is not always easily viewable; especially by newbies. Is it possible to have a thread/page/site where contributors such as myself could show a report along with clear steps on how to build that in KMM?

We are getting off-topic but I feel the reporting aspect of the program is the most important reward from using KMyMoney for me.
I put all the work into entering data in order to be able to get great reports out. Anything to improve the quality of reports would be my single most appreciated improvement.

When I evaluated programs to chose from to replace Quicken, the deciding factor for me was the reporting abilities. I looked for programs with abilities to offer subtotals on reports and found none did but KMyMoney kind of offered a backdoor to subtotals by its ability to Organize By in reports. Organizing by Category gives subtotals if you make a category hierarchy of 2 levels. I also found Organizing by Payee could often give me the subtotals I was hoping to find by other means.

I would welcome a sticky thread where we could post report how-to's. I would also like to see period polls where we could be asked to prioritize potential program enhancements, especially as related to reporting.

Well, we sort of have that already. See the current wish list items on the bugtracker. Each item has a 'vote' link (which is rather unused at the moment as far as I can tell).

IPW, yes, the vote link does answer Mark's desire to see polls, but his first part mentions a sticky thread which would contain tips for noobs to get help in creating reports. I find this aspect of KMM a real minefield. Several times I have pulled my hair out wondering why some transactions show up in a report and others do not. Through a hit-and-miss search in Configure, I stumble across a solution. I also agree with something else he implied, i.e., the KMM reports are the heart and soul of the software. Why else go to the trouble of entering data if it doesn't pay off down the road in a nice report. IMHO, of course. :-)
