Saving to cloud

Wed Mar 30, 2022 3:26 pm
I'm confused, I'm currently running KDE-5 on Win 11 and backing up to the cloud. However, when I go to that location to open the file on my other laptop running Mint 20.3 the file does not appear. Why would it be that I can access it from windows but not Linux, both of which are running KDE-5?

Thanks & Regards,
Bruce

What you described has nothing to do with KMyMoney, but just basic remote file access. We'll try to help, but we really need more information. When you say "the cloud" what exactly do you mean? Same for "does not appear."

How do you access it from Windows? If it's assigned a drive letter, how is it mounted? How do access that folder on Linux? Do you manually mount, or is it in /etc/fstab? Can you see the file from command line, or from a file manager?

I originally stored the file in my MEGA online storage. When I opened KMY in Windows it would reach out to the MEGA folder/file and all was good. However, when I went to that same folder location in Linux the file was not there. I went to my MEGA cloud storage and the file was indeed there but for some reason Linux did not see it. Really strange. Hope this helps and doesn't confuse further.

First, I am pretty sure this is not a KMyMoney issue, but a basic file or folder access issue. We have no idea what Mega online storage is. If you want help, you need to provide more information. How do you access/mount the MEGA storage on Windows, and how do you do it on Linux? What happens if you create a plain text file from Windows and then try to find it from Linux?

Possible experiment: create a file on the MEGA storage on Linux, and see if you can see it on Windows. If this works, it at least confirms you see the same folder from both sides. In that case, I would guess some type of permissions error, but that's still a bit of a guess. If it does not work, then you either have some basic access issue, or your Linux and Windows are not actually looking at the same folder.

Also, just to confirm, you are not getting any errors, but just don't see the file where you would expect to see it from Linux, correct? Have you checked dmesg or other system logs for any relevant errors?

Further suggestion - can you get any help from whoever provides your MEGA storage?

OK, I'll try your suggestions and see what happens.

In the meantime: https://mega.nz/

I have a personal account for 50G free which I established many years ago and have been using ever since.
You might want to check it out.

Is it safe to upload your software online? Are clouds as safe as they claim to be? I’ve heard that it is even easier to hack cloud storage, so it’s not the best idea to upload it there.
I want to become a tester too and specialize in penetration testing sydney. Penetration testing is more invasive than the other types of testing, but it is also a more reliable one because you can once and for all find all the cracks and leaks in your software and eliminate them. It is something that a lot of companies are looking for – proof that their software will not be hacked. Only this method can provide this proof.

In the future, please start a new thread, don't hijack an old one, especially where the topic is not really the same.
When you say "upload your software" do you really mean that, or do you mean storing your .kmy data file in the cloud?
In either case, this really has nothing to do with KMyMoney or even KDE. It is a question of how much you trust your cloud storage provider to keep your data safe. Personally, I would not trust any cloud storage without encrypting my data. Are you aware KMyMoney can work with a gpg encrypted data file? See https://docs.kde.org/stable5/en/kmymone ... ypted.html for more details.
