Dear all,

I'm trying to understand what the status of accessing US bank accounts directly from KMM is.

In particular, I'm interested in downloading transactions. If possible, then perhaps also dealing with investment accounts.

Are any US banks supported and, if so, which?

Note: I'm looking for specific names of banks that people in the forum actually use and know, from their own experience, that they work well with KMM; generic answers like "any bank that supports protocol XYZ should work" don't really help me. Most likely, people on the phone line or office at the bank have no idea about those protocols, they won't know what KMM is, and the only way to know is to open an account myself and try it, which would take considerable effort, time, and cost.

What is the process to set that up? In an ideal world, it should be as simple as clicking on a menu, selecting the bank from a drop-down list, being presented with login credentials or some more secure method to authenticate, and done. I tried looking at aqBanking (which I assume is the bridge towards connecting KMM with one's bank) and was immediately confused.

Thanks

I totally agree, that it should be as easy as possible. Unfortunately, there are just way too many implementations and options out there even when they use the same protocol. OK, enough rumbling.

Since you're located in the US, OFX is the protocol you want to use. KMyMoney provides two different ways both using 3rd party open source libraries to do that: one of them you already have discovered (AqBanking) and the other one is its own OFX implementation based on LibOFX. The latter was based on a service that provided the list and details to map accounts. Unfortunately, this (voluntary) service has been taken from the net earlier this year. Not sure, if the link still works or not.

Both methods - AqBanking and LibOFX - are accessible through the Account/Map account menu entry. The former is called KBanking and the latter is named ofximporter.

It seems, that the commercial product starting with a Q has access to those parameters but does not provide them to the public. As you mention, the banks personnel does not know the details (maybe for reasons of the liaison with Q) and simply refer to using the product (which does not really help use here).

There are KMyMoney users who use the OFX transaction download with various banks. Don't know if they read the forum here, but you might want to send an e-mail to kmymoney-user@mail.kde.org and kmymoney-devel@mail.kde.org asking for experience there as well. Make sure to ask to CC yourself in responses in case you are not subscribed to the list(s).

BTW, KMyMoney is not alone in the OFX endeavor: see GnuCash page. GnuCash also uses the AqBanking backend and has a detailed description of the process. Maybe, that also helps.
