Hello,

I recently started using KMyMoney. here is something I don't know how to do:
The year changed from 2008 to 2009 and I would like to set KmyMoney to show only the numbers (and their totals) which belong to this fiscal year. I am talking about "Cathegories" and "Accounts".

I hope you can understand what I mean - I want KMyMoney to forget about last year and show only data relevant for this year.

How do I do it?

In Configure KMyMoney -> General -> Filter -> Don't show transactions prior to:

Set the date you want and you are good to go.

Thanks but that does not do the trick... that only stops showing the transactions, but does not keep them out of the accounting...

For example the Categories Menu: It's really nice that I can immediately see how much money I've spent ever since I started using KMyMoney, but I would rather see how much money I've spent THIS YEAR (or this month or any other period of time for that matter) without having to fish it out of the Reports.

Another example: Payees - Again I would like to see how much money is on their accounts but 2009 ONLY.

I need it to close the 2008 fiscal year and start over. Is there any way of doing that? Or should it be automatic and I am doing something wrong???

There is no way to do that in the normal mode, you are not doing anything wrong.
The expert mode allows you to use Equity accounts, but I am not familiar with it.

This would help to solve the category display, as you create a transaction to the equity account that clears the balance of the category to 0. Don't know though, if you can enter such a transaction in the current setup. It won't help with the payees at all.

I did create a set of reports for 'Current year' which gives me those details.

Might be a nice feature request to only show the data a specific (fiscal) year. But that sounds more like something for a post 1.0 release.

Neither Gnucash nor Kmymoney can simply close the accounts for one financial year. I am really surprised about this. Here in India it is the most normal thing in the world to close the books on 31. March when the fiscal year is over.

Are you sure that gnucash can't? I helped a small business with gnucash a couple of years ago, and I'm pretty sure that included a year-end. I've never used kmoney, so can't comment on that.

KMyMoney does not have that feature. You can do it manually, though.

Do you really do year end processing for personal finances? It is useful for businesses, but I doubt it is clear to the non-accountant end-user.

And as has been mentioned before, GnuCash supports year-end-processing though I don't know to which extent.

Gnucash can close a financial year ( ) but leaves all data entries in the system which means one needs to deal with this entries daily in all view. In KMymoney one can hide them but how to zero out a fiscal year so that they don't inpact the account of the current yesr?
I agree that for personal use this feature is irrelevant. However we are planning to use this software in one school and one kindergarden and for them this will be a problem. I have to figure out a way to to do this.
The easy of use and the configurability of the report is much easier than in gnucash which made us switch to Kmymoney (we are in the process )

That could be worked out using the expert mode.

The accounts packages I've used in my working life did need you to have some understanding of the accounting process for the year end, which is probably why gnucash's year-end felt familiar. I no longer user it, and it's too long since to trust my memory. I just remember that there was an excellent on-line manual. Have you tried that?
