I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't find the answer. I am running KDE 4.2, with only enough KDE3 to run kmymoney (arts, kdelibs). The icon for kmymoney is okay, but the *.kmy files have just a question mark for icons. I can't change their icon because that seems to be a discontinued feature.
I figure I can get the right icon, if I copy the KDE3 icons to somewhere in KDE4. But what icons and to where? Thanks...

It's nothing to do with KMyMoney; there are quite a lot of programs for which an icon has not been provided in KDE4. I presume the reason is that they need to be recreated as SVGs and no-one has got round to doing it.

I have the icons (they came with kmymoney2). I just need to know where to put them in the kde4 hierarchy. I tried $KDEDIR/icons/hicolor, but no change.

But is it in svgz format like all the other KDE4 icons?

No it's not. I didn't realize that was necessary, since all the other icons have multiple PNG equivalents. I thought the svgz icons were just the source the others were rendered with. I'll see if that makes any difference.

I don't think that's the problem. Svg is preferable because they are able to scale better, but otherwise it shouldn't matter. KDE4 is perfectly able to use pngs as icons, or icon-sets converted from KDE3 wouldn't work. Download say Breathless for KDE4 from kde-look.org to see. No svg(z) in sight. Since the icon in question is a .png I would think Brandybuck need to copy several icons. One for each resolution. I.e., if he's using Oxygen he needs to provide an icon for 8x8, 16x16, 22x22, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, and 128x128 (or at least the correct size for whatever he has set Dolphin and/or Konqueror to use). It should be placed in /usr/share/icons/oxygen/128x128/mimetypes (change the size-dir as necessary as well as the name of the icon-set if necessary). It is, of course, also necessary to maintain the filename. I don't have Kmoney installed so I can't say for sure what the name of the icon is, but there should be one somewhere in /usr/share/icons as long as the program is installed.
