[SOLVED] can't pay off credit card

Tue Apr 21, 2009 9:42 pm
I created a transfer from my checking account to my credit card to pay it off.

The checking account is debited correctly, but the credit card is shown as being twice as much in debt (eg the amount transfered is just added to the debt).

[SOLVED] can't pay off credit card

Which version are you using? Did you set the initial balance correctly? Did you set it correctly as a Liability account?

If so, we would need an anonymous file to check what might be wrong.

I use 0.9.3.

Well I very well might be doing something incorrectly. But I think I've done all those things. I set it as a credit card account, and it shows up as under Liability under the account list. I'll PM you the anonymous data.

[SOLVED] can't pay off credit card

From looking at your file, I think the problem is that when you declared the opening balance for your credit card, you entered "-900" or some other negative value. If you owe $100 with your credit card, you have to enter "positive $100". Being a liability account, the "negative" part of the balance is already in there.

So, when looking at the ledger of the credit card, you should see the balance as a positive number when you owe money, and as a negative only in those rare occasions when the bank owes you money.

I must have done something like that. Deleting the opening balance and adding a 'charge' instead fixed the issue.

So thanks. This is the first time I've used finance software, makes planning stuff easier.
