Automatic reconciliation

Thu Feb 25, 2010 11:16 am
When I reconciliate my account in KMyMoney, I usually have entered everything right. But I have to mark each transaction as cleared by clicking on each one, then I click on the "Finish" at the bottom of the page.

I think that a simple algorithm may found automatically if the amount I entered in the Reconciliation Wizard matches my transactions, if so, as soon as I arrive at the end of the wizard, KMyMoney could tell me that it has found a list of transaction to clear that matches my reconciliation and do it for me. If no matches is found, it could also tell me that I have to do it manually.

Do you think this is easy to do ? It could make my life easier !

Thanks

Multiselection could also solve this problem. Just select all the transactions that you would have to click to mark as cleared and then mark them all as cleared in a single operation by using the context menu (right click -> mark transactions as -> cleared) or the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace shortcut.

Ooops, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace usually restarts the X-Server. Very bad. It's Ctrl-Alt-Space that does the trick.

BTW: Ctrl-A selects all (visible) transactions.

Thanks, that is more easy to do than clicking on each transaction.

But I think that an automatic matching of the transactions that have to be cleared could be useful too, for example :
I have 20 transactions in my KMyMoney that have been entered and not cleared.
Only 15 of these transactions are on my bank statement.
I enter the final number of my bank statement on the Reconciliation Wizard.

KMyMoney may look for a combination of the 20 transaction that match the final number. Usually as the numbers are quite different it find only one combination, if so KMyMoney tell me : "If I clear those 15 transactions, your reconciliation is balanced. OK ?".
If there are no combination possible it could tell me so, I will have to find the transactions I forget.
If there are more than one combination, I will have to choose it myself.

I know that combination problems aren't linear, so maybe the algorithm isn't easy to find (or effective), but such a feature could be really useful !

(Sorry for my poor English...)

Sure, your idea is perfectly valid. We just wanted to give you an alternative before we maybe add the feature sometime in the future. I added it to tracker as wishlist item: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=228492

Your English is OK, my French is worse, believe me :)

I find that some payees are not prompt in cashing payments - so automatic reconciliation would be difficult for me. At the moment one outstanding amount is the same as several other amounts; so there would be several ways of matching the total.
