Cannot close investment

Sat May 29, 2010 12:40 pm
The only way I found not to display investments I no longer hold under the corresponding account is to close them and select the setting "do not display closed accounts". The problem is that there are a couple of investments that I no longer hold, whose balance is zero, and yet I cannot close them, because the option is grayed out. Anyone any idea why?

The balance has to be zero and no schedule must reference that schedule.

The balance is zero, but for both investments, there is at least one stock split while I held them. Could that be it?

Are you trying to close the investment or the individual stock account?

The stock accounts can't be closed, you can only close the parent investment account. Just checking.

I certainly do not want to close the investment account itself. All I want, is to list only the active assets in the account; i.e. those with a nonzero balance. The full list is too long to handle. So, I am trying to close individual inactive stock accounts underneath the investment account. That worked for most of them though.

The rules that apply to close an account, is that it must have no children and no unfinished schedules must reference it.

Re: Cannot close investment

Sat May 29, 2010 4:54 pm
1. I create a new investment account ABC with attached brokerage account.
2. I edit both accounts to set the creation date at 05/01/2010.
3. I define in ABC a new investment named XXX of type stock, with ticker X1.
4. I define in ABC a second investment YYY, type stock, ticker Y1.
5. In account ABC, on 05/01/2010, I buy 10 shares of XXX @ $20 and 10 shares of YYY at $15.
6. On 05/10 I enter a stock split in account ABC for XXX with ratio 1/2.
7. On 05/20 I sell 20 shares of XXX at $ 12 per share and 10 shares of YYY at $13 per share.

At this point, the account portfolio is empty, and the brokerage account balance is $20.

8. Close account YYY : it is allowed
9. Close account XXX : it is not allowed.

So, my question is: what is the dependency that prevents me from closing XXX?

Thanks

I can't say. Those conditions are the only ones I see in the code.

I can close all investments either immediately or after exiting and re-entering KMM with one exception: I have this weird stock that performed a stock split of 51:54 at some point. I entered this number with 13 digits after the decimal point, and even if I set the stock fraction to one in one billion, I get an exact zero balance, but it still won't let me close the account. Is it possible/indicated to introduce some rounding in the code?

Re: Cannot close investment  Topic is solved

The 51:54 was not a true stock split but an exchange after a company merger/acquisition. I solved the problem by creating a new security, eliminating the old shares by "Remove Shares" and introducing the new ones using "Add Shares". This way, capital gains were not affected.

Sorry to revive this topic but the subject is the same.

Im trying to close an investment account and it seems to have a constrain regarding to its 'subaccount' (holding mouse over Close Account in toolbar says All subaccounts must be closed before the account can be closed) but there is no subaccount in the hierarchy of the account Im trying to close. All securities balance are zero (0,000000). Any help is welcome! Thank you,

I had the same problem. My concern was also not to affect capital gains (tax purposes) and I initially also used the weird stock split. That's why you cannot close the investment. It's bad idea. I believe the stock splits also cause incorrect performance reports. I probably posted about this in the forum. I cannot remember if that was ever addressed. What I ended up doing is to use the remove shares option for the old stock and add shares for the new stock. While you still have the stock splits, write down any gains/loss information you need and then try the new method.

Edit: This method does not create any artificial gains/losses when done properly. The report "Investment Performance by Account" is incomplete though. Check performance with the stock split first.

Thank you for reply. The investment Im trying to close hasn't any split in it. I just sell all the fund shares (now it has 0 share) but still not able to close it.

I hope this isn't considered necro-bumping (at least not in a bad way), but I solved this problem just now and figured I'd document it.

You can't close a zeroed out investment account in the Institutions panel because the securities under that account haven't been closed in the Investments panel. First, configure kmymoney to uncheck General > Filter > Do not show zero balance equities. Now, go to Investments and go to the Equities tab. Select the investment account you're trying to close. You'll see the names of equities under this account. If the Quantity and Value are zero (as they should be, since the account is zeroed out), you should be able to right-click and select close account for the equity. Once you do this, you can go back to Institutions and close the investment accounts you were previously unable to close.

Hope this helps!
