This is a tough one to explain. Please bear with me.

A brokerage account corresponding to an investment account was defined with an initial balance of zero. At some point after importing several operations from QIF files, the payment for the first item in the account, an investment transaction corresponding to a Buy activity, yielded a balance which was no longer equal to the negative of its payment. I know it used to be OK because I have a backup file of two weeks ago, and there, everything is still fine. I found one Buy transaction further down in the brokerage account, entered less than 2 weeks ago, that had no corresponding entry in the investment account: right-clicking the line in the ledger and selecting "Go to <invst acct>" took me to the last line of the investment account, and the Buy activity at the date of the transaction was missing in the investment account. The balance of the brokerage account was correct again after this date. I deleted the transaction in the brokerage account, but KMM asked me to confirm, since this transaction was not reconciled (not sure if this was the exact term used in the pop-up). I then manually re-entered the buy in the investment account. This greatly reduced the error on the first line of the brokerage account, but it is still not good. I found another operation of the exact same amount as the new, smaller error further down in the ledger, but this time it corresponds to a transfer from a bank account to the brokerage account used to finance a Buy of a convertible bond. The operations on this bond were: Buy, 4x Div, Remove Shares (as the bonds were eventually converted into stock). At that point, the balance of the bond in the Accounts list was zero. I deleted all 6 operations and re-entered them manually in the Investment account, but the Brokerage account balance did not change. Going back and forth to the Brokerage account to check the correspondence resulted in the last operation (Remove Shares) to disappear from the ledger of the investment account. Yet, the balance of the bond remains zero. So, the activity is still in the database but it is not visible in the ledger. Furthermore the brokerage balance is not correct either. Has anybody seen similar problems?

I exported the the stock account for which the "Remove Shares" is missing to see what KMM knows about it. The "Buy" shows up as:

I now also have a credit card account that has the wrong initial balance.

I found that there were some entries missing in the ledger in the first half of June, 2007. It turned out that the setting "Don't show reconciled transactions" was turned on, and that the missing entries had status R.

This solves the problem, except that I have no idea how some entries became reconciled.
