KMyMoney: 3.97.2: install far too confusing for new user

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 and want to use KMyMoney (which I had been using under OpenSUSE). I downloaded the archive version of KMYMOney 3.97.2 - which I think was the version I had previously been using. I extracted the archived file into a new empty folder and find that it now contains 2504 items (I don't know how to quickly get the number of sub-folders).

All I want to do is install it. So, naturally, I looked at the file README.OFX - obviously irrelevant.Next I tried the file labelled INSTALL. It refers me to some developers' web-site for KDE. It is utterly inappropriate for my needs. I spent 30 minutes or so blindly stumbling about in this mountain of files, but can find no instruction on how to install the application.

Surely it can't be this difficult? Else how do ordinary non-IT people of my age possibly use it?

Can somebody please point me to a concise step-by-step procedure for installing KMyMomey 3.97.2?

Finally, what is the difference between this version and version 1 which is available via the Ubuntu Software Centre?

3.97.2 is very old; are you sure you cannot get 4 from the repositories which will solve your problem? Loads of features have been ungraded in KMyMoney since 3.97.

here is kmymoney deb for Maverick (no idea if this is 10.10 as I don't speak Kubuntu) http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/kde/kmymoney (if you're not using 10.10 then search using http://packages.ubuntu.com/)

Really you don't want to compile programs unless you have to and standard KDE apps should be readily available in package format in any deb or rpm based distro

10.10 Maverick provides KMyMoney 4.5, and is available via the software center. it is the KDE4 version (as is the 3.97 version you have downloaded and used previously). The 1.0 versions are for the previous KDE3 desktop.

Youy want the 4.5 version already available, as it is the latest version.

Yes, I see this now. My mistake KMY 1.0 was the version which was packaged with 10.04 and I naturally thought this was an older version than 3.97.

Version 4.5 is now installed.

Thanks all for the help.
