Migrating KMyMoney to another computer

I am currently using 3.5.10 on xubuntu 9.04.
I want to migrate to 4.5.2 on lubuntu 10.10 (another machine)

Best way to do it?
Put 3.5.10 on new machine and then upgrade or would it be ok to go straight for 4.5.2 with my old kmy file?

What do I need to move across apart from my kmy file
I have lots of securities with price history that I don't want to lose.

TIA

All the data is contained in your .kmy file. Make sure you copy the correct one and you are ready to go.

The one thing that will not be transferred is your settings. The new version uses a new settings file, so you'll have to check and adjust that.

I was hoping you were going to say that!
I'll give it a try later today.
Shame about the settings. I guess I will have to set the kde date format again since I don't use kde desktop and bring across my price download settings. That's not so bad.
Custom report settings too maybe?

Thanks for the swift response.

You could solve your setting migration by copying the old
Code: Select all
$(HOME)/.kde/share/config/kmymoney2rc
file (from the old machine) to
Code: Select all
$(HOME)/.kde4/share/config/kmymoneyrc
on the new machine - just make sure your KDE4 settings are in $(HOME)/.kde4/.

Thanks, I cut the important bits out of my old rc file to use in the new one so that worked OK.

All done now and the data looks good.

I'm now getting warnings on the consistency check about initial prices for half my 170 securities not being set. That seems quite reasonable since I imported many years worth of Quicken->MS Money transactions when I moved to KMyMoney and couldn't figure out how to sensibly import price history. I can set initial values to avoid the nag screen which is a chore but not a problem.

BUT

What is not so good is that 4.5.2 is slow and pretty much unusable. It takes minutes to open and grabs the processor for minutes at a time with little disk access. At such times top shows kmymoney using 96% CPU. No idea what its doing.

I'm not bothered about reverting to 3.5.10 and the previous kde environment since it did all I asked of it, but having got this far is there anything I can do to identify what is causing the slow response?

The laptop is a 750Mhz P3 with 320MB memory - so pretty minimal! However I should emphasise I was perfectly happy with response using the previous version of kde/KMyMoney. I'm not going to buy a new laptop just to run KMyMoney 4.5.2 - this one has been fine for 10 years and I still use it when traveling with openoffice etc.

Any suggestions not including using my laptop as a door stop appreciated.

Thanks again

EDIT: Sorry - My current KMyMoney is version 1.0.2 not 3.5.10 - brain failure...

OK, I have reverted to KMyMoney 1.04 with KDE 3.5.10. No problems with speed on that combination.

I can feel your pain. I also went back to 1.0.5. See http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=90096&start=15

Thanks zebulon. I should have checked the forum beforehand - clearly KMyMoney 4 is not for computationally challenged machines at present...
:z :z :'(

However on the positive side at least KMyMoney 1 performs well.

It doesn't have to do with the machines, but rather with the account composition. We have a set of patches for this situation that improve performance a lot in these situations and we expect to have a new version out soon.
