I've posted on this before.
It seems that the transaction matching isn't working as described in the handbook. The handbook states:
The handbook suggests the name of the payee is part of the comparison but this doesn't seem to be so. I have 2 transactions for the same amount but for different payees, one falls on 1st of the month and the other on 3rd. KMyMoney mis-matches these transactions. This month both transactions occurred on the same date yet were still mis-matched, as can be seen here: Could it be that, way-back-when, I failed to notice when the mis-match first occurred and since then KMyMoney has applied the same rule to these transactions? If so can it be made to unlearn? Thanks Nick

Since nobody replied yet: have you checked in the "Payees" ledger under the "Matching" stub that your payees do not refer to one another? If so, you can remove the synonyms.

You can do the 'unlearn' function by fixing the historic transaction to refer the correct payee. Also check, that matching is turned on for those payees. Do you have scheduled transactions setup for those payments? Check them too.

Thank you for all the feedback.
I hadn't noticed the "Matching" stub on the "Payees" ledger. Both are correctly set to "Match on Payee name" so I suspect these are OK. Both are scheduled transactions and I have verified these assigned to the correct "Pay to" and I have now fixed any historic transactions that were wrong. Finally I have manually corrected the latest imported transactions as described in the handbook. Hopefully this should put everything right, I'll know in a couple of weeks when my next bank statement is available.
