a few simple questions

Sun Jan 01, 2012 5:01 pm
Hi! I have a few questions and didn't want to open multiple threads, so I thought I'd put them all here:

1) I accidentally turned off the dialog that says reminds me not to leave a page until I finish entering a transaction. Is there a way to turn this dialog back on?

2) Is there a way to reinvest capital gains, same as the reinvest dividends option? I didn't see a way to do this other than "add shares," which doesn't have a category, or sending money to a brokerage account and then purchasing more of the security, which is pretty clunky.

3) Is there a way to have an account but not have it appear on my home screen, in my taxes, or in my net worth? I have an account for my Amazon credit (a lot) just so that I can keep track of how I spend that money, but obviously it would not be appropriate to keep in my net worth.

Thanks!

I give it a try to find some answers:

1) Select Settings/Enable all settings which brings back all messages that have been turned off. A more fine grained option to turn on single messages is to stop all instances of KMyMoney and modify the [Notification Messages] section in your ~/.kde4/share/config/kmymoneyrc file.

2) not sure, but the clunky way might be the only one available atm. I am not an investment expert, so I can't really tell.

3) No. Can't you make it an expense category? Just an idea.

How did you obtain those capital gains? Through a sale? Through free distribution or allocation of shares? You probably have to enter your new shares as a simple "buy", possibly at a price of zero.

I did a reinvestment of capital gains in a Vanguard mutual fund that I had. I don't know the mechanics exactly, but that's what my end-of-year statement said.

So, it is not obvious what those capital gains correspond to. Normally the term is only used for profits on a sale. Are you sure you still have the same amount of shares of that fund? Was there some kind of operation on the shares, like a stock split, with the remaining fraction being sold off? In any case, I would just book the reinvestment as a regular buy operation and describe the origin of the funds in the Memo field. To be balanced, you need a Deposit entry in the brokerage account corresponding to the amount of the capital gains.
