Paypal and KMyMoney

Tue Mar 06, 2012 9:53 pm
How do you guys import Paypal history reports to KMyMoney? I tried to download the reports as QIF from Paypal, but KMyMoney puts all the records into a single account, however there are 2 currencies: USD and GBP. And even if I then move the transactions manually I get wrong balance.

If Paypal can create .csv files, you can use the CSV plugin to import the reports

In case Paypal supports QIF export and there are problems to import them to KMyMoney, we need to have an example so that we can check into it. Otherwise, CSV as pointed out bei Hei_Ku is an alternative in case provided by Paypal.

Hei Ku and ipwizard, I think you are missing the OP's point here. The reason KMyMoney can't import arbitrary CSV transaction logs from PayPal is because a single PayPal account can have multiple balances, each in a different currency. In the CSV file, each transaction is tagged according to what currency it is in. I don't think that KMyMoney supports accounts that contain multiple balances, each in a different currency, but even if it does, the KMyMoney importer does not allow you to select which field of the file identifies the currency.

I think that in order to manage a PayPal account with KMyMoney, you need to create a separate account for each currency used by the PayPal account. You would then need to split PayPal's transaction log into separate files, one for each currency, and then import those separately into the appropriate accounts. But doing it this way, you will end up with a mess of spaghetti, because PayPal automatically takes care of converting between currencies, and meticulously logs all these conversions in its ledger. For example, I have a PayPal account set up to automatically bill my bank account, which is denominated in EUR. When I use PayPal to buy something online in GBP, my PayPal account gets debited in GBP, then that debit gets converted to a debit in EUR. Then PayPal takes money from my bank account, resulting in a credit in EUR. That credit then gets converted to a credit in GBP. So for a single purchase, PayPal's ledger logs four separate transactions in two different currencies. Manually reconciling such entries among different KMyMoney accounts would require a lot of work.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that KMyMoney can automate too much of this work.
