Wow, there are already some screencasts and it is still saturday! I want to note that I do not think that using the notes plasmoid for annotations is not the best idea. How about using subtitle files (srt). I saw in a thread in an other forum, that you can merge videos with subtitle files to another video with mencoder. There would be the advantage of translating the subtitle files when they are in the repository. I really could imagine that screencasts can be some kind of handbook of the next generation, but then they have to be easily translated.

Possibly OT but:
Or just use voice... I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person that absolutely hates screencasts that write text on the screen as a form of communication. Even if you have a really bad accent having speech is far more professional than pausing what you are doing just so the user can read. The added advantage of using voice is that you can describe what you are doing while you actually do it, I'd love to see you do that with text. Either use speech or describe the video externally of the stream. That's my rule. |

Yes, voice and subtitles can exists side by side. If you do not want to hear the audio you can mute it. And because audio and video streams are seperated, an alternative audio stream in another language can be produced. If we use subtitle files they can also be turned off. Here are some interesting ressources:

If subtitles were used I'd highly recommend using SubStation Alpha (SSA/****) instead of SubRip as the format is so much nicer to use and the end result looks much better due to the larger amount of formatting options available.

The Dolphin screencast by sebas is a good example of use of notes plasmoid to describe the stuff. I admit, it's not the best idea, but it's the one that requires less work, as I wanted the entry barrier for this to be as low as possible. (.srt is a good idea, though)
It's not the first time I try a decoupled description/video thing, but last time - see KDE-Promo ML archives - the stuff just died out (also for my lack of time). Video annotations would be neat, but they're available only on YouTube, hence, non-Free only format.

no, I'm strongly against publishing screencasts only in non-free formats, but I like the idea of subtitles, they seem to be more consistent on the video and plus, they can be translated! We have one week einar, can we try to do that? (I personally have no idea how it's done!)

Let's get the screencasts finalized, then I can ask people to do an additional, note-less version and see how we can put subtitles in there.

I have noticed that when I choose Folder view for Desktop type it dosen't change the activity I'm on but rather adds a new Folder view activity.
This can be seen in my screencast. The question is: Is this a feature or a bug??

I discovered the following behavior:

I thought, this has something to do with the renaming of the activity.
I didn't discover such a behavior and have never renamed it. But the question remains, feature or bug? Regards, TeaAge

You may want to report it as bug, stating to close it if it's an intended feature.
