Userbase Editing Course 1 - Summary

Wed Jan 27, 2010 2:20 pm
Six students were accepted for the course. One had hardware problems and had to drop out, and I accepted a last-minute request, replacing him. Five of the students chose their topics, the sixth did not reply to either the announcement topic or the course topic.

The quality of pages produced was quite high. They can be seen at

http://userbase.kde.org/KUser
http://userbase.kde.org/Printer_Config
http://userbase.kde.org/KUIViewer
http://userbase.kde.org/KTTS

All four of these contributors have said that they intend doing further userbase editing work. The contributor of the KUIViewer page is currently writing, on userbase, a multi-page manual for his own aplication.

I am pleased with the quality of what was achieved by all of these students.

It should also be said that the fifth student, that had to drop out through hardware problems, has announced his intention of enroling for the next course. All in all, that's at least a 66% success rate, I think.

Feedback comments and requests were helpful. Some are already implemented. The topic viewtopic.php?f=71&t=85214 details the concerns of the students replying. Having worked on mediawiki editing for almost 2 years, and still learning, I felt that it would be useful to have an area on the forum where questions on the topic could be asked. We now have a topic "Discuss UserBase Editing" in the Klassroom forum, for use by anyone with editing questions.

I am concerned about the time-management of the course. While accepting that disposable time varies from person to person, I found it disconcerting that only two students began work in the first half of the week. I doubt if anything can be done about this, though.

I propose to run the course again in a few weeks, but due to the imminent launch of both 4.4 and the new website, with ensuing wiki updates, feel that it should be delayed until late February at the earliest.
