KDE sucks and stuff like that

Sun Nov 29, 2009 10:07 am
I have lately become sick of reading posts from users who complain about KDE4 and several of its features. What really gets on my nerves is not the complain itself (which is most of the times actualy called for), but the manner and tone of the posts. Think about these two possibilities.

First scenario:
You are using an open source FREE desktop environment; you have not donated a nickel; the people who have created and develop the desktop environment do it as volunteers.

Second scenario:
You have donated more than 400 U$S; thanks to the million dollars contributions of the users, the people tho develop the DE are becoming rich.

If you belong to the first group:

1. What the hell gives you the right to bash and rant about the uselessness of the cashew, plasmoids, etc.?
If you don't like a certain feature, why not express your gratitude to the developers and then request with good manners that it be revised, modified, etc. Or else, why don't YOU get involved and try to get it solved.

2. What gives you the right to be rude to people who are working pro bono every day just so that you can have an operating system that is, all things considered, simply better than MS?

If you belong to the second group:
1. Why did you donate in the first place?
2. Do you believe that rude and childish complains will actually contribute to the discussion and to the improvement of the DE?

To sum up: have you stopped for a moment to think that it is thanks to these people that you can enjoy a free, open source, state of the art, DE every single day. Have you stopped to think about the hours of serious work that KDE people have spent so that you can play with your war games or watch a silly video on youtube?

That's all.

Sometimes we get so frustrated we just have to have a release. The internet is an easy way to do that anomiesly. It's been that way since the day I first logged onto a BBS. Don't expect it to ever change, besides it gives me chance to release by flaming back! All with a little smiley so there are no hard feelings. ;)

I don't quite get your reply.
What do you mean by "where the party rocks"?

What i wanted to tell you was, that almost exactly your topic (well, sometimes even vice versa) is going on at the kde-mailinglist. It reached 100+ postings now and is (sometimes) quite interesting... (Topic is: "Why KDE4 is called KDE?")

I agree with the topic author. But you have to understand. You can't always satisfy every consumer out there whether you're writing a commercial application or open source.

Like when I'm on a certain IRC channel (won't name it). They always complain about Qt and the MOC. Or they complain about how it doesn't use the standard containers etc. Someone is always going to complain about something or another.

Let it never be said I think KDE is perfect...but it's the DE that I complain least about ;)

In recent past two KDE developers wrote about this stuff. I understand their feelings about it, and I understand yours. But you will have to learn to deal with it. Get used to it! Because it doesn't really matter what it is... It could be KDE, GNOME, cars, dinosaurs etc. People, particularly when they have some feelings about it, will do what they do and you can't change it. You should ignore it, and instead of loosing time with someone who is not listening to you, go and do something useful... ;D

It's not the point of dealing with it. We don't mind the criticism. But when it's in a rude, obnoxious behaviour that is what makes it annoying. If you tell us what's wrong and give us reasonable information on what it is you do not like, do like, what is not working as expected, etc. And give us good information about the problem we would fix it.

How does saying "OMFG you guys suck!", "GNOME R0xerz" or some stupid remarks like that? How do you expect anything to be fixed or anything? There are a ton of people out there that do that stuff. And most users don't try or just don't understand nothing ever stays the same. Like the ones who want KDE-3.5.x to still be supported.

They don't understand that things evolve over time. Just like computer hardware. Just because it was good yesterday doesn't mean it will be good 10 years from now. Computer hardware changes every 6 months or so. And the same thing happens to computer software. It changes almost every year or so.

I feel there is a definate lack of reasoning when people complain about a DE, a distros implementation of it is normally the problem, many of the users I've seen who are aggressive to KDE are using Kubuntu...personally, Kubuntu could do with a little more work and a little less silly things breaking.

To those of you who dislike Kubuntu's version of KDE, I have written a small guide that may make it easier: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=84725 if not sort out most end-user problems.

Others have complained of KDE's substandard performance on old hardware...well, it's hardly KDE's Fault, is it? It's the user trying to run a modern system on hardware that should of been dumped 7 years ago...I do apologize to those who also think Linux does not a DE at all and was perfectly fine being completely CLI based....

(that said, I have got a desktop downstairs that likes KDE, even if the damn thing itself barely passes the specs for Windows 98)

Still, other users have temperamental luck with distros and DE's, I've had two computers that hate specific distros (eeebuntu on my netbook, for instance) and my old desktop (which could only run Mandriva and nothing else)

lolz I just posted a topic similar to this one because I was getting sick of surfing the web and finding people saying similar things. Its sooooooo f'ing anoying.

I personally have always liked KDE over the competitors, I first tried KDE in Mandrake in 2003 and many years later I starting playing with it again in Mandriva and now run Mandriva Latest with KDE Latest as my main OS. BTW Love the 4.4 tweaks.

i just don't understand what these people are saying, but it seems they were able to get in Mandriva's head since I noticed the latest distro is running the old school menu out of the box (new menu is a common complaint of said individuals) I almost picked SUSE over Mandriva because of that damn menu until I read it was a KDE thing and I could turn it on in Mandriva too :p

I feel like we need a name for these people, these people that dont want to adopt new and better things. I have to work with one of these guys once in a while and at the company he works for he uses Norton Ghost instead of Acronis, Mcafee instead of ANYTHING ELSE which makes all the computers run like pooh, His users have XP with SP2 and IE6 and so on. WTF?

I could go on and on about this but I wont. I will say one final thing and thats with the new KDE it seems like you can do ANYTHING with the desktop. ANYTHING you put your mind to. You want it to look like Windows XP? Done, Windows 7? Done, OSX? Done, whats that you want your windows to do a fruit roll up and then a backflip when they close and your computer to shout obscene jesters at your co workers? OK thats not done but thats just weird.

I'm sitting here, running with the desktop cube, the snow effect active, god knows how many special effects...and I must say, if I tried to do this with anything eariler then 4.3, I would of crashed by now, great job devs! :D

Anyway; I can see your point about the old menu style, but I do personally like my desktop to have a bit of jazz, which I feel the new menu brings.

In terms of a name; we cant use Troll (if only because of Trolltech) and we can't use idiot, if only because thats a bit rude...how about "The Uninformed"? :P

We need a name that goes with what I said above and something that makes you think of a grandpa, oldschool, outdated, stubborn, arrogant and maybe some other choice words. We might just have to make a word up lol
