Not exactly a KDE problem, but...

Sun Apr 18, 2010 2:33 pm
I've got a problem with my wireless router, networking tech is not my strong suite so I'm asking for help here:

For some odd, odd reason, 2 of three of my Kubuntu machines have their wireless cut off. I've got no idea at all what's causing this.

The two affected machines are quite far away from the router, the third is quite close to it.

I authenticate with the wireless router...then for some odd reason, my connection dies...Kubuntu, however (and a few other distros I've tried) all report that I still HAVE a connection...yet I cannot access webpages, or even the router itself.

The routers logs never show me disconnecting, and one of my computers has the GNOME network manager on it (which still does it) and the other did have the WICD client on it (which did it far more often)

Interestingly enough, if I replace the network client, then no such problems occur...until I reset either machine. :/ Two machines are now using the KNetworkManager frontend

So, am I just looking at a case of poor signal strength? or something else? How on earth do I correct it?

Try checking the output of "iwconfig" and "dmesg" once you are disconnected.

suddenly doing that seems to of restored my connection...I'll do the other when it screws up again.

Looks like your computer disconnects before your router has the chance to respond to the DHCP acknowledgement...

Have you tried setting a static IP address?

Assuming you use KNetworkManager... Tray Icon > Manage Connections > (Select Connection) > Edit > IP address.

Change method to "Manual" then enter the details needed. Confirm and connect to the network.
