so far every single kde upgrade I've done ive had to wipe my old config for some reason or other; it drives me crazy! Wish it didn't have to be this way :(

I hadn't to do that - but I had to suggest it to people several times.....
Apparently the different configurations between versions are on some surfaces incompatible.....

Maybe somebody knows, I'm curious 8)

you mean your entire ~/.kde4 (or ~/.kde) directory?

I know that moving to 4.5 my plasma rc files needed to be recreated and maybe the rc's for a couple/few apps but never the entire directory.

i usually wipe the whole .kde folder when the system is being extra quircky; i back it up first and copy and paste some configs over -- like kmail's. Every major KDE upgrade (like from 4.3 to 4.4 to 4.5 etc) I have to wipe it. I sometimes have to wipe it after minor upgrades too (like 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 etc ). I suppose it comes from KDE advancing so fast.
