Would http://sourceforge.net/projects/matio/ fit your needs? Honestly, I have not yet used it, nor have I checked if it uses HDF.

I've started a simple wrapper for matio, this is what i've got so far... basic read/write functionality is there, but still needs proper testing etc...:
