@algotruneman: Yay! that's looking good now. All that's left is to open http://userbase.kde.org/Applications/System and click on the red-link for Printer Configuration. That will open the new page for editing. Copy and paste your work, and you're done. Play safe, though. Don't delete it from your user page until you have checked that everything copied over correctly.
When you've finished, try clicking on the Category link at the bottom - you should see your page listed along with other System files. Do you feel able to start another page?

@annew
I've doctored the places you suggested, but... Couple of final questions. 1) The initial description did not automatically become bold. Do we have to do that manually as I did here? I also doctored the image down to a smaller than recommended size of 150px. 2) In the "I choose" paragraph which is in an unordered list item, the text is being full justified. I don't see why that is happening. I see the same issue in a paragraph earlier in the page, too, and that justified paragraph also follows and image on the page. 3) The printer image came from the "Image:foo" source and my own uploads are in the "File:foo" location. How are those determined? Is there an easy way to view the available images before creating one of my own? I will make it live as you suggest [done] and keep it on my own page, too. While the juices are flowing, it would probably be smart to do another page. I await your suggestion?

Yes, you always have to use three blips, ''', before and after the text to get bold, and two to get italic. Five blips gives you bold+italic.
Yes, I noticed that. I think the new balance is better. You just have to use your discretion on things like that.
I have seen that happen sometimes, and not found an explanation. However, I've viewed your page in Konqueror, Arora and Chromium, and none of those show it as fully justified. We are talking about the single line between the two images, aren't we?
The file name is chosen by the person uploading it in the first place, and it's stored in the Gallery. In the navigation panel on the left, click Special Pages and scroll down to Recent changes and logs. Click on Gallery of New Files. The gallery is searchable. If you enter 'print' in the search box you will see that 9 files are listed, all having 'print' in the name. Sometimes you need to try some alternatives, but usually you can see whether there's anything suitable or not.
Your turn to choose, I think Anything at all that interests you.

Thanks for reminding me to check my work in more than one browser. Konqueror does not show the spreading out of full justification, so maybe it is an issue with my Firefox 3.0.xx. With the 3.5 version, it looks better, too.
Will a second page qualify as part of the course, and can I continue to post questions in this topic on the forum? Is there a course "final" to take? Will you need to focus on a next course, or can we novices continue to pester you with questions as we move forward?

I'm inclined to think that it is a browser issue.
There's no problem at all about continuing here. Your questions help anyone else reading to understand the issues.
Not in the sense of exam, but I will be asking for feedback, comments on what worked well and things that can be improved for next time.
It will be better if we don't clutter up any future course, so that the students at that time don't get confused. However, questions are always welcome. They can either be on userbase discussion pages, or, if the feedback from other students think it helpful, we can ask the forum team how best to allot space to follow-up work. Either way, you won't be abandoned

I made a little page for KUIViewer http://userbase.kde.org/KUIViewer (my userbase-home page is used for KrossWordPuzzle ). The icon is a little bit small, I think I need to get the SVG-File and create a bigger png. I'll do that tomorrow (and add a screenshot).
Is there anything else missing? |

Going on very nicely Some minor comments - The introductory table - please use text-align="center", for consistency with other pages. Experiment with width of the table to get better balance of text lines -probably 75-80% width would work. Tables that use icons rather than screenshots need this kind of compromise. I'd also suggest adding one or two colons in front of the table, to balance it on the page. However, all this is subjective, so use your discretion. Under LDAP - change lokal to local When you've finished, change your info panel to explain about clickable images - many people won't know about them, and your images will benefit. That's it, really. Well done!

Yes, it suffers from the same problem, and therefore needs the same cure, as BelaLugosi found. Play around with proportion, as I suggested to him.
Are there techbase pages that could be usefully linked here? Both for KUIViewer and for Qt Designer? Question for you - should we have a similar short introduction to Qt Designer, again linking to techbase? Apart from this, no problem that I can see

@fpuelz: Some very minor comments -
Use colons to indent your introductory table - experiment until you feel it is balanced. Bullet points stand out better slightly indented - a single colon is probably sufficient The page looks slightly squashed at the bottom - try adding an additional empty line before the Note.

I have added a link to techbase for an introduction on howto use Qt Designer. There's also a link to the originial documentation by Nokia. Maybe I should also add that link to the KUIViewer page?
I don't think Qt Designer needs a page on UserBase. But I don't really know what of the Development category belongs to Techbase and what to UserBase. For me the Techbase page of Qt Designer is sufficient and the originial docu is big and has many images (but of course it has another layout). I would like to have a KDesigner with an own page on Techbase/Userbase. Ah, and I have translated the page to german The KrossWordPuzzle-page is also a little bit updated now (http://userbase.kde.org/User:Fpuelz), it got some structure, not so big images and some text. The features section will get shorter with less text, when those features are explained in their seperate sections. One question: Can I add links to sections inside the same page? Like in the table of contents. I couldn't find that in the toolbox (only internal links to other pages). |

I don't think you need to - I assume that it's linked on Techbase? If it isn't, it probably should be.
I accept your judgement on that. I think that it's important that there is some indication on Userbase that it exists, but the link from your page does that job, I think.
I assume that's a wish for the developers?
Excellent news - thanks.
Good - I'll take a look at it now, and we can discuss issues in the next messages
Yes, it might be easier if you gave me an example of where you want to use it, but the general idea is
Try it. If it doesn't give the correct result, come back with specifics and we'll look at why. The section-name needs to be exact, in capitalisation and using underscore for space.

Yes, it's linked on Techbase. But to an old version, Qt 4.3. There's also documentation for Qt Designer 4.6, the link should be updated.
Yes, right
It worked, thanks I used it to refer to the dictionary section (but that didn't exist, I've just created it). I think I will use that at some other places for the KrossWordPuzzle page. |

@fpuelz: Looking through KrossWordPuzzle. This is definitely going to need splitting up. The feature list alone will give quite a big first page, then we will need the rest in sub-pages. However, it's probably a good idea to carry on for the moment, getting down all you want to say. We can cut and paste into the 'real' pages when you are ready.
Your in-line images are a bit small. Experiment with size. I've altered the first one to 350px and centered it. You might even like it to be a bit bigger. If you decide that you want more screenshots at the point of that first one, put them in a table. Your guideline for image size should be 'Can the user get the gist of the sort of information on this screen?'. It can then be enlarged if they actually need to see the detail - I'd advise an Info panel explaining clickable images, if they are likely to need them. The big hicough is going to be the need for mysql to be set up. I'm wondering whether it would be best to have an Advanced User category page explaining how that's done. If you know a really good guide at ordinary user level, we would point to that instead. What are your thoughts on that?

Maybe I should change the database to SQLite, maybe as alternative. But the most stuff of setting up MySQL is done automatically (create a krosswordpuzzle user, create the database and the tables), the user just needs to know the root MySQL password (which is blank by default). So setting up MySQL here only means installing it with the package manager and changing the root password for security reasons (or just leave it). But a page explaining this could be useful. Also for amarok, they use a method, where the user needs to create the database and user manually and grant privileges to the newly created user (but they use SQLite by default).
So, yes, I think, such a page would be useful. I don't know a good existing page for that, but we could google one Splitting up the KrossWordPuzzle page is a great idea. There's some more text to come.. I've changed the size of the other inline images, looks much better now I found something in Toolbox, which adds a line saying "Support for this application can be found from the project's home page". But I don't know where the default place to put the project's home page url is. That would be the kde-apps.org page as I have no other page for it. |
