As this is the final day of our extended 'week', I would like to ask you to visit viewtopic.php?f=71&t=85214 to give feedback.

I have been asked about further help after today. That is no problem. You can continue to work on your pages and to ask questions. I'll answer as quickly as I can. The feedback that we get from this course will determine the best place to do this.

We hope you have enjoyed the course and found it helpful, and look forward to seeing your future work.

@annew,

As a second project, I plan to tackle krdc and krfb, working on them as a pair since they are the client and the server of the same process: remote desktop.

Is it appropriate to set a note in place on each project page to indicate that they are being used for UserBase Klassroom with a page talk link to my user page?

@Algotruneman: That's good news. I've been wanting to see them done for some time, and didn't feel competent to do them myself. Your idea for links sounds very good to me. :-)

Hi!
I will finish the KrossWordPuzzle page next week. And I will experiment with the ToC, thanks for your suggestions! Maybe I just leave it as it is now, I got somewhat accustomed to it. But I'll add links in the sections in the base page, currently the headings are the links (to the sub pages).
Ah, and yes, that's exactly what I wanted: "something clickable that will show lower levels". That could make the feature list somewhat shorter and only shows more detail where needed. But it seems not too easy to do..

Another page I would like to write is for publicTransport (another piece of software from me ;)). It's a plasmoid (and a data engine, but only the plasmoid should go into UserBase), which shows departures / arrivals for public transport and can also show journey information. It should go into the "Desktop" category.. somewhere under "Lancelot", I think.

I haven't been able to find anything that can do that, I'm afraid. Sorry.

Could do - it depends, really, how much you would want to write about it. If it's short you may want to put it under Plasma/Plasmoids - but even if you go for a full page from Applications/Desktop, I'd still like to see it linked from the Plasmoids page.

If you need help moving your KrossWordPuzzle pages just ask. I'll be around for questions anyway.

I just haven't found the Plasma/Plasmoids page ;) It won't get too long I think, I'll try to make it short.

The KUIViewer is ready I think. I'll remove the "under construction" box.

I just copied over my work from my user page to the KTTS page. It is good enough for basic use, but I'm planning on working on it soon to include some of the advanced configuration for it.

Nicely timed for inclusion in the new website :-) Thanks

I've been compiling notes and screen captures for krdc/krbf, but have run into an issue that needs help. Krbf seems to be unstable. There appears to be a longstanding bug. The krbf server crashes frequently.

Have you searched http://bugs.kde.org for a bug number? I don't know anything about the application, beyond the vaguest idea of its purpose. If I can read a bit more about the problem I can try to find a developer able and willing to help us.

@annew, I did a Google search and found bugs with these symptoms on Ubuntu, Debian and eventually found a number on bugs.kde.org: 124529. I have read through the thread, and there appears to be a resolution. I'm not a bug fixer, so I don't quite follow the terse/clipped responses. Maybe the bug fix has not filtered into the Kubuntu 8.10.2 update chain.

It also sounds as if there was a krfb rewrite for KDE 4.x. Maybe I can get more stable results if I work backwards, letting my Kubuntu 9.10 Asus be the host, but that will involve using the KDE 3.5.x client, not desirable for the process of writing the UserBase page.

I think I'll see about setting up a tower CPU to host with Kubuntu 9.10 and then keep going with the Asus as client. This will slow down the writing, but as long as nobody else is working on the krdc/krfb pages, I'll keep at it.

Further kde bug searches reveals 64 bug numbers related to krfb. Bug 124529 isn't the one most on track. I need to review the 64.

Bug 100231 sounds related with the crash mentioned and was last commented by George Goldberg who intended to patch it, probably in KDE 4.x

There's no hurry for it, so it's best to wait until you have a set up where you can work comfortably with it.

Some of those bug reports will be very old, and probably fixed in various releases. If you are reviewing them, start from the newest, noticing which distro versions they relate to. Hopefully it will then be obvious when you might as well stop reading. I'll read up on the bug number you gave me, though.

@annew, Well, it's been interesting. The desktop computer onto which I tried to install Kubuntu 9.10 wouldn't finish booting, nor would KDE Fedora 12. I did make some progress using the Gnome desktop Fedora 12. I worked through setting the Gnome share tool and finding that desktop sharing doesn't work until one also opens the VNC ports in the firewall. All the effort did give me insight as to problems one could encounter. Those problems will be included in the eventual info.

You can take a peek at my page http://userbase.kde.org/User:Algotruneman to see what I've done so far.

I'll keep at the effort to get a modern KDE desktop set up and will then deal with the Krfb page, too.

I did take the extra step of creating the initial "announcement" on each page "Krdc" and "Krfb" as a way to let people know the work is ongoing.

If you installed Kubuntu from a disk it is probably the version that had some essential dependencies missing. You might find it best to install Ubuntu then add KDE packages - although the version of Kubuntu currently on-line should be OK. If you want to try Fedora (I think you said you have a second system?) tell me exactly where it failed. I know some others have had a problem, and I think there was an easy fix. I'll look back at my saved mail for that.

The page is progressing well, and I like the fact that you put up the info signs on the actual pages. I'm looking forward to seeing this completed. I've never seen a guide that I could understand ;-)
