I've noticed that there are a few apps that I regularly open and close. And predictably, those apps are also the ones that I open after booting.
Konqueror had this neat little feature where you could keep an instance or more preloaded, so that it opens instantly. So, I was wondering, would it be possible to introduce a little option in System Settins somwhere where you can tell KDE that after it boots up, it can start loading firefox, kontact, etc. in the background because I"m probably going to use them pretty soon. Or else, if that's not possible or doable, it would be really awesome if we could get the same option for Dolphin, to preload a few instances. Because I'm always opening and closing Dolphin. |

I'm not sure my idea is close to yours but I think they would supplement each other. My idea is that KDE should have «Focus existing window if any» option in hotkey settings and shortcut properties. So, if I have an already opened Konsole window and am trying to call Konsole again, KDE should restore the existing window instead of creating new one, especially if it is on the current desktop. For some apps, like Dolphin, it could open a new tab in the existing window.
With such option, StephanG could simply add «firefox, kontact, etc» into autostart and then call them as usually — but, in fact, just opening existing windows quickly. |

Is this not already effectively achieved in an automatic manner with the "preload" system daemon that exists in many distributions?

It could be. I use Kubuntu, and I'm not sure if it is one of those distributions, it does tend to ship on the lighter side. It just feels as if apps load slowly the first time. |
