auto-save option in Kate

Mon May 21, 2012 12:39 pm
Please introduce auto-save option in Kate in custom given time space like every minute or two.
It was asked for ten years ago:
http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-kant&m=103031395311851&w=2
Even if it is not a priority for Kate developers it would be great to have this option someday.

This auo-save feature is already in Kjots. Can't you just copy paste some code to Kate to make it work?

At least in my case, I feel that an autosave feature would be useful as I often forget to save my program before I run it to test the program. Then I'm confused for a second when I run the program since the program hasn't changed its output in any manner, and then I realize that I forgot to save.

tl;dr Autosave would be really useful

Thanks for reading.

same here. i know it's an old thread, but, i really want this too. i'm so used to constantly editing open documents, and walking away to do other little tasks, etc, that i had grown used to this functionality from gedit, and like it very much. fwiw, after searching around a bit, to see if this was already present, i noticed there are quite a few other people who would really like this as well.

BUT: please don't make it so that it REQUIRES those "backup file" thingies - the ones that use a tilde or whatever - i don't need or want that, and i have it disabled in kate already, so i'd like to be able to enable autosave, and, it just saves over the ONLY copy of the document, every $X number of minutes (i like to set it to every 1 minute).

i guess what would work best for every one is:
"auto-backup" (what you already have) OR "auto-save" OR "neither", as a mutually exclusive option.

thanks!

An autosave feature would be so handy. I think a lot of people are accustomed to autosave from other text editors. My workflow would be nicer if I didn't have to save the file before running it in terminal.
I made an account on this forum for the purpose of supporting this thread.

I'm pleased to see that, eighteen years on (which is about when I started using KDE), the community is still requesting this feature. >:D

Seriously though, it just goes to show that, despite some niggles, KDE is *ing awesome.

(But please, please do introduce auto-saving to Kate *palms-together emoji* × ∞)

I've been using Kate for more than 5 years now and I would really LOVE to see the auto-save feature see the light. I see it's backed up by other people as well, so I think there is a lot of benefit from it 8)
